Pro Sports Wrap - by Sam Ruesler

Perfect Suspension

August 16th 2012 16:23
Some big news in sports yesterday that didn't have to deal with football. I guess Jeff Demps will be deciding on a NFL team, but that hasn't happened yet and isn't that big of a deal. Baseball was the center of the sports world yesterday, which makes sense because it is the only thing actually going on right now. The All-Star Game MVP is now suspended 50 games. Melky Cabrera tested positive for high levels of testosterone. Not only was he the MVP of the mid summer classic but also 2nd in the NL in batting average.

With only 45 games left Cabrera will miss the rest of the season and possibly the postseason, which the Giants are fighting to get into. He did admit to it saying it was a result of a substance that he shouldn't have taken. Obviously this is a huge story in baseball, but Melky is probably extremely happy that Felix Hernandez threw the 23rd perfect game in MLB history yesterday. It was the 2nd no-hitter thrown by the Mariners this year (1st was a combined 6 pitcher). They also became the first team ever to throw a perfect game and have one thrown against them in the same season.

King Felix struck out 12 batters winning 1-0 making it the first season with 3 perfect games. It also made it the 6th no-hitter this year, with the record being 7. So what's with all the no-hitters over the past few seasons? Well, pitchers are stronger and throw harder while hitters are less patient. Don't be surprised if the record is set this year and perfection is continually thrown.

Outside of baseball there was a friendly soccer match between USA and Mexico. Who cares it was just a friendly right? Well it was in Mexico where America had never won in 75 years; going in they were 0-23-1. It looked more of the same throughout the match with the home team dominating ball control and goal opportunities. The red white and blue was just looking to hang out for a draw. Then in the 80th minute Michael Orozco Fiscal put the US up 1-0 on an ugly goal with deflections and a backheel flip towards the goal. Tim Howard sealed the historic victory with diving saves in the closing minutes. Now it reads 1-23-1.
