No Octopi For You!
May 24th 2008 01:06
Detroit Red Wings fans will have to do some shopping around, or pack a cooler before they leave home if they want to toss out the octopi on the ice at the Mellon Arena in game 3 or 4 of the Stanley Cup finals.
Dan Wholey, owner of Wholey’s Fish Market in Pittsburgh will not sell any octopus to people in Wings jerseys, who have a Midwestern accent, or anyone he gets a bad feeling about them possibly being a fan of the Red Wings. He may even go as far as checking IDs for addresses to prevent them from continuing their tradition of throwing octopi onto the ice while they are in the Mellon Arena.
Wholey said, "I have the utmost respect for all the people of Detroit. They are great citizens and great hockey fans, just like I am. But I'm a Penguins fan first and foremost and I want to see the Penguins win, period." He also went on to say that they are welcomed to buy anything else in the store, just not the octopus.
The octopi tossing is a Detroit tradition that started way back in 1952. For the full story behind the strange act click here.
