Wimbledon Seedings Released

The Wimbledon Tennis Tournament begins this coming Monday. The seedings were released on Wednesday, and there were very few surprises. On the women's side of things the top 20 seeds are identical to the World Top 20. The only notable surprise on the men's side was Marcos Baghdatis being ranked #10. He is currently ranked just 25th in the World Rankings.

The only player from Great Britain to be ranked is #12 Andy Murray.
The only ranked Australian was Lleyton Hewitt at #20.

The other surprise was the confidence of Novak Djokovic. He has said that with Federer's crushing loss at the French Open has shaken him mentally. Djokovic lost to Rafael Nadal in the Queen's Club final this past week, so maybe he should consider the possibility that he would have to get past both of them to win Wimbledon. Especially since for the past two years the final was Federer - Nadal. The win was also Nadal's first title won on grass.

My early picks to win in England are Rafael Nadal on the men's side, and on the ladies' side I think Ana Ivanovic could fall. I am however not sure to who, but I am leaning toward Maria Sharapova, Elena Dementieva, or French Open surprise Dinara Safina. I should have a better idea in the coming days.

First time I have felt Federer vulnerable since winning his first Wimbledon against Philippoussis in 2003. In fact, Rafa surprised me by getting so close last year. But that is the past.

If not a residual effect of sickness, then I am in agreement with Djokovic. I notice that Bjorn Borg also selects a Nadal v Djokovic final.

Still, few players can match Roger on the grass, so he should get deep enough to regain confidence/health (whichever). But he did not look right at Roland Garros.

The difference now is Nadal's backhand. When first on tour it was a slow and loopy push-into-play shot. But now it is a flattened-out bullet. This shot more than anything else has been a reason for his success, even on clay. Strong (now) on both sides. Before he might run around to hit a forehand, but not now.

Roger needs this win. Rafa wants it. Novak could steal it. Intriguing.

Would love to see Elena win a Slam. But somehow doubt that she can. Would like to see Ana win again. Only three legitimate chances in the men's, but the women's could produce a surprise.

More late nights.
