Wimbledon Ladies’ Quarter-Finals Results
Jie Zheng needed three sets to get past Nicole Vaidisova, but it wasn’t as close as it sounds. The 19 year old Vaidisova had somewhat of a meltdown along the way, and just coundn’t play as well as she can or get her timing. Zheng took full advantage of this to become the first-ever ladies’ qualifier to reach the semi-finals at Wimbledon, and the first Chinese player to reach a semi-finals in any major.
Serena Williams cruised to an easy 6-4, 6-0 win over Agnieszka Radwanska. As I said in my preview, Radwanska had already lost the match mentally the day before, they just needed to play to make it official. It only took her 51 minutes to finish off the 19 year old Pole.
The Elena Dementieva – Nadia Petrova match was strange and full of errors, and a few breakdowns by both players. In the end Dementieva held on in three sets to take the win. If she makes the same mistakes in the Semis she will be little trouble for Venus Williams. It is Dementieva’s first trip to the Semis at Wimbledon in ten tries.
Venus Williams needed just two sets to get past 31 year old Tamarine Tanasugarn. The score showed 6-4, 6-3, but it wasn’t nearly as close as that score might indicate.
