Jankovic and Safina Both Hurt, One Advances, the Other Does Not
#2 seed Jelena Jankovic hurt her knee in the first set of her match against Caroline Wozniacki and needed three visits from the trainer during their match. Wozniacki definitely made her work for the win, taking the first set 6-2, and winning four games in the second set. Jankovic played down her injury after the match. She has a day off tomorrow to rest her swollen knee, and will probably be good to go against Tamarine Tanasugarn on Monday.
Dinara Safina was treated with icepacks on both of her thighs during her three hour and twenty-five minute match, a Wimbledon Ladies’ match record, against Isreali Shahar Peer. Safina was in tears near the end of the match. She finished the match with a double fault, which was about par for the course for her today. Peer now moves on to face #5 seed Elena Dementieva. Dementieva also had a hard match today. She finished it in straight sets, but by a score of only 7-6 (7-2), 7-5, as the Argentine Gisela Dulko pushed her to the limit.
Venus Williams made it through rather easily, although Maria Jose Martinez sanchez did put on a charge in the second set which ended 7-5. During the match Williams set the Wimbledon record for speed of a serve, at 127MPH. Venus moves on to face Russian Alisa Kleybanova.
Alla Kudryavtseva of Russia continued her good week with a win over China’s Shuai Peng. She moves on to face fellow Russian #21 Nadia Petrova who needed two tie-breaks to upset #16 Victoria Azarenka. Let’s hope Kudryavtseva approves of Petrova’s wardrobe choice!
I am upset that there will be no Dementieva – Safina match, I truly thought it would have been the match of the tournament. Without Safina, Dementieva’s road to a Semi-Finals match up with a tired Williams or Jankovic should be a little bit easier.
