Ivanovic joins Sharapova as Spectator at Wimbledon
The story of the day was Ana Ivanovic, the new World #1, being upset by World #133 Jie Zheng of China. Not only did Ivanovic lose, but she looked bad in doing it. The entire match took just 72 minutes, and ended 6-1, 6-4. This was Zheng’s third time at Wimbledon, and certainly the biggest win of her career to date. With the win Zheng becomes the first-ever Chinese player to beat a reigning World #1. The 24 year old is battling back from missing all of last year with an ankle injury, and is on her way to the Beijing Olympics, this win can only help her chances there. This opens up the women’s rankings and could allow Jelena Jankovic to become the new #1.
Although Ivanovic was the biggest upset of the day, she wasn’t the only seeded woman to fall. American Bethanie Mattek upset #11 seed Marion Bartoli in an easy 6-4, 6-1 match. In a match that wasn’t an upset, #29 Amelie Mauresmo got beat by #6 Serena Williams.
With Ivanovic gone the entire Championship is now wide open in my opinion. It could be anybodies ballgame. . . err, tennis match. Be sure to check back over the weekend for our Round Four preview.
