Wimbledon Gentlemen's Quarter-Finals - Here Comes the Rain
The start of the day was delayed by rain for about 45 minutes. Once things got started Roger Federer got the first set over with in 20 minutes. At one game all in the second set they had to stop for more rain. The delay seemed to be just what Mario Ancic needed. After he had dropped the first set 6-1 he came back after the rain and pushed the second set to 5-5 before dropping it 7-5. In the third set they play one game that went to Deuce 10 times and took nearly as long as that first set, lasting 16 minutes. The final set would end 6-4 in favor of the five-time defending champ. It was Federer’s 64th straight victory on grass, which is an astonishing number. Will he be able to get his 65th on Friday against Marat Safin? We’ll have to wait and see.
Marat Safin apparently also loved the break for rain. Feliciano Lopez had built up a 5-2 lead in the first set before the stoppage for rain, and Safin was not at all happy. After they came back out from the rain delay he seemed like a different player. Lopez would take that first set 6-3, but after that Safin turned it all around. He jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the second set. On set point for Safin, Lopez sent one into the net, 7-5 Safin. The third set went into a tie-break which Safin dominated and won 7-1 which gave him the set 7-6. In the third set Safin broke Lopez’s serve twice and built up a 5-2 lead. On match point with Lopez serving, the Spaniard double faulted to hand the set and match to Safin.
Englanders turned out in full force to watch as Andy Murray tried to defeat what looks to be an unstoppable Rafael Nadal. Murray was doing well till about 4-3 in the first set, Nadal would finish off the first set easily at 6-3. Rafa saw the faltering of Murray and his serve and pounced, winning the second set easily 6-2. Murray didn’t give up just yet as he pushed the third set to 5-4 with Nadal serving for the set and match. Murray hit one long to end it. It was Rafa’s 22nd straight win this year. He moves on with the chance to become the first male to win the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year since Bjorn Borg in 1980. With Murray’s loss it will be at least 73 years the Brits will have to wait for one of their own to win at the All England Club.
The fourth Quarter-Final match between Rainer Schuettler and Arnaud Clement was suspended after two sets. Schuettler took set one 6-3, while Clement evened it up in set two at 7-5.
It was another exciting day to watch, as expected. It is sure to be an incredible final four days in England. Even if every expert in the world thinks they already know both finals matchups already. There is a reason they play the matches rather than listen to the experts to decide the winners. Just go ask; Ivanovic, Jankovic, Sharapova, Kuznetsova, Djokovic, Davydenko, and Kuznetsova, they will tell you not to count on Federer – Nadal, and Williams – Williams just yet.
