Safin Rolls On, And Ancic Follows
It was an exciting and long day at The All England Club. Marat Safin upset #29 Andreas Seppi of Italy in the last singles match to finish for the day. It ended at about 9:20 local time, and even Safin said after the match that it was dark enough that they couldn’t see the ball at times. It took four sets, and two tie-breaks, but Safin has shown that he just might be back. Safin’s biggest challenge will be his next match, which we will preview some time before the start of the match Monday.
Croatian Mario Ancic after being plagued by injuries and illness also seems to be back. His upset of #5 seed David Ferrer finished up about 15 minutes before Safin’s match ended. It too was an exciting hard fought match, this one also went four sets and needed two tie-breaks.After the win Ancic dropped to his knees and kissed the grass.
The last American male was ousted from England when Feliciano Lopez beat bobby Reynolds in four sets. Lopez will now face Marcos Baghdatis who advanced against Simon Stadler.
Roger Federer rolled through his match against Marc Gicquel, and Lleyton Hewitt fought off a late push from Simone Bolelli to win in straight sets. This sets up what is sure to be an exciting match between Federer and Hewitt in Round Four.
I am actually really looking forward to the upcoming round at Wimbledon. I won’t get into details here, but I would like to officially go on record to say Roger Federer WILL NOT win Wimbledon this year. For my reasons why (and there are many) be sure to check back over the weekend for our Round Four preview.
By the way. . . Did you know that if Lleyton Hewitt can defeat Federer in the fourth round, and Rafael Nadal could win Wimbledon that Federer would finally lose the World #1 ranking?
