Wimbledon Gentlemen's Day 1 Results
There was one or two surprises in the first day in England. German Simon Stadler beat 18th seeded Croation Ivo Karlovic in four sets. Number 7 seeded Argentine David Nalbandian is a former Wimbledon finalist, and has lost in the first round of a Grand Slam just once in 26 tries, and never at Wimbledon. After today he has now been ousted in the first round for a second time. Today it was World #98 ranked Canadian Frank Dancevic who won rather easily in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, 6-4.
Three matches had to go five sets to decide a winner. Number 11 seed Tomas Berdych needed a 7-5 fifth set to get past Russian Evgeny Korolev. Swede Thomas Johansson dropped the first two sets of his long match in tie-breaks, the first of which he lost 10-8. He then came back in the last three sets against American Vincent Spadea 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 to advance to play #10 Marco Baghdatis. The third match to go five sets was a bit of a surprise, it was #20 seeded Australian Lleyton Hewitt’s match with Wimbledon rookie Robin Hasse of The Netherlands. Hasse shocked Hewitt by winning the first set in tie-break, but then Hewitt took control in the second and third sets winning both 6-3. Hasse would not go quietly though, he forced the fourth set into a tie-break also, and won that tie-break 7-1. Hewitt overcame the rookie’s challenge though by finishing the match with a 6-2 win in the fifth. It was the fifth time Hewitt has played a five set match at Wimbledon, he has now won four of those matches.
Novak Djokovic was a bit surprised by his German opponent Michael Berrer as he dropped the second set 6-2, but controlled the rest of the match. Federer rolled easily into the second round. My prediction of a good outing by American Robbie Ginepri came to an early end as he was ousted by #15 Fernando Gonzalez of Chile.
