Wimbledon Day 9 Schedule - Final 8 Men Play

July 2nd 2008 11:36
Wimbledon Day 9 Schedule – The Men Take Centre Stage, and Court

The first match on Centre Court today is Roger Federer against Mario Ancic. Both men can play down the fact that Ancic was the last to defeat Federer on grass in 2002, but the fact remains. Federer has dominated the Croat since then, beating him five times, including a straight set win two years ago on this very court. Certainly there is a great chance that Roger Federer will win today, but there is that possibility of an upset since he is the last person to figure out how to beat him on grass. I think Federer will prevail, in my opinion the question is how much will Ancic take out of him as he heads into the semi-finals, and will it be enough to make it a little easier for Marat Safin to beat him. (That sort of gives away my next pick.)

My Pick: Roger Federer, in four sets.

The early match on Court 1 pits Marat Safin against Feliciano Lopez. This should be the most fun match of the day to watch. Lopez has won four their five head to head meetings, including ousting Safin from Wimbledon in 2005. This is a new and improved Safin though. As #3 seed Novak Djokovic said after their match in week one, “he is mentally there”. This should be the difference that gets Safin into the semis at Wimbledon for the first time.

My Pick: Marat Safin, in five sets

The later match on Court 1 will be between German Rainer Schuettler and Frenchman Arnaud Clement. I have made it clear that I would have rather seen their two previous and younger opponents face-off in this spot today, but alas that didn’t happen. So instead we have the two older veterans who have had more success as doubles players, and who surely share a bit of a dislike for a man named Agassi. Andre Agassi cost them both a win at the Australian Open, Clement on 2001, and Schuettler in 2003.

My Pick: Rainer Schuettler, in four sets.

The late match on Centre Court will most likely be the match of the day. #2 Rafael Nadal will be facing off against the Scot, Andy Murray. The stands and lawns will undoubtedly be overflowing with interested fans cheering on their countryman. It will definitely be Rafa’s biggest challenge thus far since coming to England last week. Will Murray have enough to get past the Spaniard trying to reach his third straight finals at the All England Club? We’ll have to wait and see. One thing is for sure it will be an incredible match, if you have the means to watch it, you should do what you can to see it. Nadal holds a 3-0 advantage in head to head matches, and i think he keeps that perfect record in tact.

My Pick: Rafael Nadal in four sets, although I have a hunch it just might make it to five.

You do know (??) that if you had placed a bet on Safin & Elena Dementieva to make (even) the semis you would have won quite a bit. Good crystal ball predictions.

Apart from Federer and Nadal it is a tournament of surprises:

Safin winning on grass. Sublimely talented - his US Open win over Sampras made him look a certain & long-time world number 1 - but he has never performed on grass before.

The semi against Roger is deja vu with regards to his last Grand Slam win. And that was a great match on hardcourt here. But surely not on grass.

And Nadal just beats either either longshot in his semi (Schuettler or Clement! Hard to believe either got so deep. I'm now considering making a comeback...).

I would really love Elena Dementieva to win Wimbledon - or any Grand Slam. Equally (if not) the best groundies of any on the womens' tour - but her serve has always let her down. Improved, but unreliable.

I find a Williams/Williams final totally boring. But it is looking likely (almost certain). Actually Federer has the most difficult semi of all!

So what do we think?

Federer & Nadal

Venus & Serena

???? (agree???)

The mens' final should be fantastic if they both (as expected) play again.
