Wimbledon Day 13 - Gentlemen's Final
It will be the 18th match between #1 Roger Federer and #2 Rafael Nadal. Rafa leads the head to head series 11-6, with most of the matches taking place on the clay that he prefers. Federer has won 65 straight matches on grass, he has only been pushed to a fifth set once during that span. It was last year in the Wimbledon final against Rafa. Federer is looking to make history in a number of ways today. He is attempting to win his sixth consecutive Wimbledon Championship, which would break the tie between him and Bjorn Borg for the record in the Open Era. It would also tie William Renshaw as the only six time winner of the championship. Although as I stated in a previous post, back in the 1880s Renshaw only needed to play in the final the following year to defend his championships. This means his 2nd-6th championships were won by winning just one match each year. Fed is also closing in on the record for most Grand Slam wins in a career which is currently held by Pete Sampras with 14. If he wins today Roger would have his thirteenth.
Rafa too is looking to make some history of his own. If he wins today he would be the first men's player to win the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year since Borg did it during his five year Wimbledon run. Nadal would also become the first Spaniard to win at Wimbledon since 1966 when Manolo Santana won it. Rafa won his first ever tournament on grass the week leading into Wimbledon, a major step to overcome. The question is can he do it on a much bigger stage against a much better opponent.
My Pick: Rafael Nadal in four close sets.
In other action on Centre Court is the Mixed Doubles Finals which includes both of the Bryan brothers. The #1 seeded team of Mike Bryan (USA) & Katarina Srebotnik (SLO) will face the team of Bob Bryan (USA) & Samantha Stosur (AUS) I am going to pick the upset in this match.
My Pick: Bob Bryan & Samantha Stosur win in three sets.
