U.S. Open Tennis Update – Wednesday 9-3-08
Well the ladies semi-finals is set for the U.S. Open.
The Williams sisters faced off again today. They kept one another running back and forth all of center court at Arthur Ashe Stadium. This time it took two tie-break sets for Serena to come out on top. When it started it looked like Venus was taking control, but Serena stormed back again and again.
No. 6 seed Dinara Safina kept her silver medal momentum going in her match against No. 16 seeded Italian, Flavia Pennetta. Safina won this one rather easily 6-2, 6-3. She now moves on to her semi-final match against Serena Williams.
On the other side of the quarterfinals bracket fellow Russian and Olympic (Gold) Medalist, Elena Dementieva also made easy work of her opponent, No. 15 seed Patty Schnyder, 6-2, 6-3.
In the other matchup No. 2 seed Jelena Jankovic kept her hopes of becoming the third Serb to win a Grand Slam event alive by defeating her No. 29 seed opponent Sybille Bammer, 6-1, 6-4.
On the men’s side of things half of the semis is set after a late night of tennis on center court. It was also a different story for the men, whereas the women got things done in straight sets, the men needed four sets each to settle things.
No. 6 seed Andy Murray of Great Britain needed four sets, including tie-breaks in the first two to get past No. 17 Argentinian Juan Martin Del Potro.
World No. 1 Rafael Nadal dropped the first set of his match against American Mardy Fish. He controlled things after that point however winning the next three sets 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. This match finished just after 2AM Eastern Time, but fans still packed the stadium to watch till the end. Just before it was over they actually put the camera on three very young children who were up way past their bedtime to watch.
Tomorrow the rest of the men’s semi-final will be set as No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic will try to eliminated the final American male in the field when he takes on No. 8 Andy Roddick. In the other men’s single match tomorrow World No. 2 Roger Federer faces unseeded Gilles Muller of Luxembourg.
