U.S. Open Tennis Day 11 Results
In what is shaping up to be a great story, as I predicted yesterday, the Women’s Doubles team of Australian Samantha Stosur, and American Lisa Raymond did win their semi-finals match 7-5, 6-1 and advanced to the finals in Flushing. They are a former No. 1 ranked team, and won the U.S. Open in 2005. However, last year here in Flushing she had to leave early and head home to Australia. When she got there she went to the emergency room due to severe headaches. At first doctors thought it might be viral meningitis. After a month full of test though they found out she had Lyme Disease. She went through a course of antibiotics and slowly made a recovery from the disease.
The team was ousted from the French Open in the third round, but they came back at Wimbledon and made the finals there. They lost to the Williams sisters in that final.
They now have to wait till Friday to find out who they will face in the final. The No. 5 seeded team of Anabel Medina Garrigues & Virginia Ruano Pascual will face the No. 1 seeded team of Cara Black & Liezel Huber.
In the Mixed Doubles Finals Cara Black & Leander Paes won the title 7(8) – 6(6), 6-4. I also managed to pick that match correctly.
The next match in Ashe Stadium was the Men’s Singles Quarter-finals match between Roger Federer and unseeded qualifier Gilles Muller of Luxembourg. Federer still looked a bit tired during this match, but did manage to do just enough to win, 7(7)-6(5), 6-4, 7(7)-6(5). Muller played a great match and definitely gave Federer a run for his money, and the crowd appreciated it. They cheered throughout and gave him a rousing ovation after it was all over, as did Federer, praising him in the post match interview.
I did not realize the Exhibition match would be only one set. Todd Martin defeated Michael Chang 8-4.
The last match on Center Court, and the final match to be televised on the USA Network was a pretty good match, the other Men’s Qtr. Finals match. Andy Roddick made Novak Djokovic have to beat him in a fourth set tie-break to win the match. Djokovic looked tired in a few spots, but was pushed onward by Roddick’s comments prior to the match. Roddick had joked that Djokovic was suffering from 16 injuries at the moment. Djokovic didn’t think it was funny and pointed that out in the post match interview which got amixed reaction from the crowd. Djokovic won 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 7(7) – 6(5). I picked this match wrong, by the way.
Djokovic moves into the Semi-Finals now to face Roger Federer.
In the Mixed Doubles Champions Finals, Robin White & Luke Jensen defeated Mary Joe Fernandez & MaliVai Washington 6-3, 6-4. I also predicted this match incorrectly.
