U.S. Open Rain Shortened Super-Saturday Results – 9-6-08
As expected the rains from Hurricane Hanna rolled in during the middle of the day and cancelled half of the matches on the schedule.
The rain did hold off long enough for Roger Federer to beat Novak Djokovic in four sets to advance to his fifth straight U.S. Open Final. The match was also Federer’s 33rd straight match won in Flushing. He looked so much better in this match than he has through the early rounds. It seems he is peaking at the right time, just as a great champion usually does. Federer’s serve was working well for him all day, he finished with 20 Aces, and just one double fault. Djokovic helped out by making 47 unforced errors, whereas Fed only made 28. Actually exerything was working well for Roger throughout the match, his forehand was spectacular, as was his backhand shots. Djokovic looked like he had a chance after the second set, but Fed just shut him down, especially in the 4th and final set. Federer will have to wait to find out who he will be facing in the finals on Monday night after the Nadal-Murray match was suspended early due to the weather.
Novak Djokovic SRB (3) 3 7 5 2
Roger Federer SUI (2) 6 5 7 6
Apparently playing into the Gold Medal match at the Olympics in Beijing is having a bad effect on those that made it that far. Both Elena Dementieva and Dinara Safina lost in the Women’s Semis, and now Rafael Nadal is close to being ousted by Andy Murray. The match was suspended due to the weather but before the rains came Murray pulled out to a huge lead over the World No. 1. They completed two sets, with Murray winning them both, 6-2, 7(7)-6(5). They started the third set, but only got 5 games in, with Nadal taking a slim 3-2 lead. Nadal is up a break however, and will serve when they pick the match back up on Sunday. The rain may have been the best thing that could have happened for Nadal. I think with the nearly full day to regroup he will come out and do what might seem to many the impossible, and come back to win this match. The winner will face four-time defending champion Federer.
The match will pick up Sunday afternoon at 4PM ET, and will be aired on CBS Sports after the 1PM ET NFL game. The Women’s Finals will start at 9PM ET on Sunday. With the Men’s Finals then being played Monday at 5PM ET.
