U.S. Open Day 13 – Super Saturday Schedule – 9-6-08
Flushing as well as most of the northeast is expected to be blanketed with the remnants of Hurricane Hanna on Saturday. This could reek havoc on Super Saturday scheduling. Luckily Open officials have a plan in place.
The actual schedule is as follows
Arthur Ashe Stadium (All Matches)
11AM ET Start time
Men’s Singles Semi
Novak Djokovic(SRB)[3]
V
Roger Federer(SUI)[2]
Followed by, but not before 12PM ET
Men’s Singles Semi
Rafael Nadal(ESP)[1]
v.
Andy Murray(GBR)[6]
The Nadal-Murray match might be moved to Louis Armstrong Stadium if they think they can get the match in prior to the rains moving in. Regardless it would not start until 12Pm ET at the earliest.
7PM ET
Women’s Singles Finals
Serena Williams(USA)[4]
v.
Jelena Jankovic(SRB)[2]
Followed by
Men’s Singles Champions
Pat Cash(AUS)
v.
Mats Wilander(SWE)
Now for the back-up scheduling plan.
If the entire day and night is rained out the schedule will be as follows.
Men’s Singles Semis would be held on Sunday, September 7th at 1PM ET (televised on ESPN) and 4PM ET (televised by CBS Sports, with coverage beginning after CBS’s NFL coverage)
Women’s Singles Final would be held on Sunday, September 7th at 9PM ET (televised by CBS Sports)
Mens Singles Finals would then be held on Monday, September 8th at 5PM ET (televised by CBS Sports)
Now to really confuse everyone, officials have an even bigger plan.
If the day-time session is completed, but the nighttime is rained out then the following scenario would go into effect.
Both singles finals would be held on Sunday, September 7th. One match at 4PM ET, the other at 9PM ET. The decision as to which finals would be in which timeslot will be decided after they see what time the Men’s Semis finishes. Both matches in this case would be televised by CBS Sports.
Please note however, if the Men’s Semis does not get completed Saturday the first scenario will override the rest.
Now that many of us are thoroughly confused, including the Open officials, and I am sure John McEnroe as well, here are my picks.
I think the battle of the two that have looked tired will stretch them both to their limits as Djokovic and Federer have to go five sets in what could be remembered as an epic battle for the ages. I do however see Federer getting the upper hand and heading to the finals.
Rafa on the overhand should be well rested for the finals as I see him getting past Andy Murray in straight sets. If they actually do move this match to Armstrong Stadium because they think they can beat the weather Rafa might even be done and back inside before the other match is over.
Now, as far as the Women’s Finals, I believe now that Jelena Jankovic has gotten over the hump and made it into a Grand Slam final she will actually win it too. It would make her the third Serb to win a Grand Slam in history, and also in 2008. (Djokovic won the Australian, and Ivanovic the French this year.) I think she pushes Serena Williams enough to tire her out in time for the third set which she will win about 6-2 or 6-3.
Although not popular down under, I am picking Mats Wilander to defeat Pat Cash with little trouble.
Enjoy Super-Soggy-Saturday
