U.S. Open Day 12 Results – 9-5-08
Well I thought the Bryan brothers would need an extra set to win their sixth Grand Slam title, and in doing so regain their World No. 1 seeding. The actually won in straight sets, but played close to a third set in tie-breaks. They won the first set 7-6 after edging Lukas Dlouhy & Leander Paes in a 7-5 tie-break. The second set ended with the same score 7-6, but this time they needed to get to 12 to win the tie-break by a score of 12-10.
While the Men’s Doubles went as I expected, the Women’s Singles Semis went the exact opposite of what I had thought.
It was not a good day for the Russian Olympic Gold and Silver medalists. Serena Williams overpowered and outplayed Dinara Safina and won in straight sets with little trouble, 6-3, 6-2. In the other semis match Jelena Jankovic finally got it done in a Grand Slam Semi-Final. She advances to her first ever Slam final after easily beating Elena Dementieva, 6-4, 6-4. This was Jankovic fifth win out of eight tries over Dementieva. She had, as of today, made it to three of the four Grand Slam semis this year, and as I said is now advancing into her first slam final.
No. 2 Jankovic will face No. 4 Williams in the finals on Saturday, weather permitting. (See our Saturday Schedule post for details about the weather and possible rescheduling.)
In the Women’s Singles Champions – Finals, Martina Navratilova won easily, as I expected, over Jana Novotna, 6-3, 6-3.
Cara Black and Liezel Huber won their Semi-Finals match, but they did it in a much easier fashion than I expected. They got past Spaniards, Anabel Medina Garrigues & Virginia Ruano Pascual easily, 6-1, 6-4, and advance into the finals.
In the other match of interest from Friday, Todd Martin defeated Australian Pat Cash in the Men’s Singles Championship – Semi-Finals, 6-4, 6-4.
