Tiger Woods Out for the Season and more

June 18th 2008 23:14
It’s a good thing Tiger Wood considers this U.S. Open win to be his best yet, it is now also a bit more understandable why he thinks so. It will be his last tournament for quite some time. He will be having season-ending surgery to repair a torn ACL in his left knee. He also has a double stress fracture of the left tibia, an injury he knew about two weeks prior to the Open. Doctors told him he needed to take six additional weeks off in order to let that heal.

The stress fractures were what prevented him from playing in the Memorial a couple weeks ago. He has been playing with the torn ACL since last July’s British Open. It apparently happened as he jogged home from the course while he was there. After it happened he won seven straight tournaments. Which is why he was going to try and wait till after the season to have the ligament repaired.

This news makes his win at Torrey Pines so much more monumental, not to mention all the wins since last July. A torn ACL shuts down football and baseball players for months. Granted golf is not a contact sport, but even walking on a leg with a torn ACL and a stress fracture causes some intense pain. Add in the torque created by Tiger’s powerful swing and just imagine how long a normal man would last out there.

ESPN has been comparing his performance to that of Kirk Gibson hitting the home run in the world series and hobbling around the bases, Willis Reed on the basketball court, and . They have also been showing replays of every time he grimaced throughout the 91 holes. Robert Karlsson’s caddy who spent all 18 holes on Saturday walking around with Tiger. He commented how all day long he kept hearing strange noises coming from Tiger, and more specifically his knee.

The sport is already contemplating how bad this is for the sport. Pointing out how bad the ratings dropped while Tiger was out recovering from the last surgery. There really is a good chance the PGA will lose a huge chunk of their audience until he returns in six to eight months.

Many who questioned why Tiger felt this was better than his first Master’s win, or his 15 stroke win at the U.S. Open should now be quieted, and might now agree with Tiger. It is just simply amazing that he could beat the field on one leg. Sure it will cost him some time on the course and a few big tournaments, but they can rebuild him, they have the technology. He will come back faster and stronger. . . wait that’s the Six-Million Dollar Man. I wonder if the PGA can look into adding that cool sound effect to all of Tiger’s moves when he comes back. Probably not while golf is on NBC and ESPN. They should outsource the project to FOX sports. They always come up with the stuff like that, The K-Zone thing with the ugly animated ball is one example of what I mean. Although wasn’t it NBC that did that thing with the hockey puck being lit up during televised hockey games? Anyway, the point I am trying to make is, Tiger Woods just became even more super-human than anyone had thought. He truly is simply the best.

The following has been added on to help me express a point to the comment left below.

This John Daly is the one that won the 1991 PGA Championship, the 1995 British Open, and a few non-major tournaments.

A leaner John Daly wins the PGA Championship, & British Open.

This John Daly played in 11 tournaments in 2008, and made the weekend cut just three times, with a best finish of 60th.

The John Daly of today.
This John Daly played in 24 events in 2007, but made the cut just 9 times, while finishing in the top 25 twice. The last time this John Daly finished in the top 10 was in 2005.

So, if you can't be fat to play a sport what about some of these guys, not to mention many many others in the NFL, NBA, and other sports. These guys aren't athletes? They don't play sports? We already see your thoughts on baseball players, which i don't understand. 80% of them would excel at any sport you put them in. In every sport there are a few hefty players, that doen't mean their game is not a sport.

I would like to see your list of sports and a list of the guys you think could play golf for four days on a pro course. . . and be competitive.

I still think that's incredibly lame, a golf injury. I'm to injured to play golf, i must be really hurt, because golf is so strenuous. It's such a hardcore "sport". Although golf isn't a sport then is it. It's a skill. Because Golfers are not athletes, (John Daly anyone?) just like baseball players. If you can be fat and lazy and do it, it's not a sport.

It's easy to laugh off the "injury" but a torn ACL and two stress fractures is nothing to laugh at. I've had a stress fracture in my foot and could hardly move. I've known athletes who have torn their ACL and it's common for them to be out of action for 5-6 months.
And Tiger had both of these injuries DURING the US Open. I'd like to see anyone play 18 holes of golf ...not to mention 91 holes...with just one of those injuries,
The only reason Tiger made it through was because of the incredible athlete he is.

As for the they aren't athletes look at John Daly comment...1. John Daly is bug I'll grant that. But he is in shape, he looks fatter than most people think he is because he plays pro golf amongst many incredibly fit athletes. And go ahead and tell me when the last time John Daly even won a tournament? When the last time he even finished in the top 10 was?
Yeah, anybody can play golf....but playing golf good is another thing. That's why I agreee with this post that Tiger is simply the best

I am wondering if the poster of the first comment has ever picked up a golf club and tried a swing somewhere other than the local Putt-Putt golf range with the windmill hole. It causes incredible torque to drive the ball 250 yards, especially on the legs and knees. Not to mention this isn't your normal round of golf where you go out and play 18 holes while driving around in a little cart and having someone deliver cocktails to you at the green. He is walking the length of 18 holes four days straight, in the case of the U.S. Open last weekend, five straight, and cranking all that torque into a left knee and leg that has a torn ACL, and a double stress fracture. Most would be hopped up on pain meds and sitting stationary for weeks.

As far as the comments about the "fat and lazy", "not a sport"... I have added a little bit to the end of this post to address that, so I could include some images.
