The Packers Will Not Release Brett Favre
The Green Bay Packers have let it be known that they won’t give up Favre for nothing in return. They announced they will not release him just a day after they received a letter from Brett’s agent requesting his release. Packers GM Ted Thompson said, “We have communicated to Brett, that we have since moved forward. At the same time, we’ve never said that there couldn’t be some role that he might play here.” Even though the Associated Press reported Favre’s only role with the team would be as a back-up Thompson later disputed that fact saying, “It’s not accurate. We don’t know what role that would be. He can come back as an active member of the Green Bay Packers.” He also would not field any questions about the team possibly trading Favre, other than to say he had not received in calls from other teams interested in Brett.
Favre now has until July 27th to apply for reinstatement through the commissioner’s office. The Packers first practice is the day after that on the 28th.
Personally I think this is utterly ridiculous. What a slap in the face to the sure Hall of Famer from a franchise he has devoted 16 years to, and kept them at or near the top for most of that time. A lot of people are saying this is just the teams way of calling Brett’s bluff. That would be fine if he was bluffing in anyway. He is off practicing with a high school team to get himself in shape. What in that says he is bluffing in any way?
If Brett is forced to remain a member of the Packers I don’t see how they would give him any role other than a backup after Thompson has said “we have since moved on.” I can see it at the end of the season, “So coach Mike McCarthy, your team finished 6-10, and missed the playoffs. All of this happened while you had the legendary Brett Favre sitting on the bench making $12 million. How can you possibly explain this?”
I seriously doubt any of that will happen, well other than the Pack finishing 6-10 with Aaron Rodgers as quarterback. Favre however will not be sitting on the frozen bench in Lambeau field, in Packers colors anyway. This all just Green Bays way to get him back on the active roster and then trade him away. This way they get something in return for him. As another slap in the face to Brett it also prevents him from signing a one year contract worth closer to $20 million to become a hired hit-man for an NFC team. Yes, that is right, “Welcome to the AFC, Brett.” If Brett is going to play his home games somewhere other than the Frozen Tundra they will want it to be as far away from head to head competition as they can get him. In the AFC he can’t block the Pack from making it into the Super Bowl, although at 6-10 that wouldn’t happen anyway.
::: phone rngs::: “What’s that Mr. Parcells? You like quarterbacks with a bunch of experience (Testaverde, Bledsoe), and in return you have a great dancer that can sack guys too?”
::: phone rings three times for a conference call::: “So, Mr. Thompson, you have a quarterback who likes to play n the cold and are looking to get rid of him?” “Well, yes GM’s from Cleveland, Buffalo, and Baltimore, indeed I do.”
In closing, Favre will be padding his Hall of Fame stats this season, and it won’t be in a Packer’s uniform, and it is a sad thing that the team can’t have the respect for their franchise player for nearly two decades to let him go play where he wants.
