The greatest golfer
June 16th 2008 08:33
How good is this guy? Surgery can’t stop him. A so-so day on the course can’t stop him. Can Rocco Mediate in 18 holes stop him? We’ll see. Even if he does, there is no doubt the Tiger Woods simply is the greatest golfer ever.
It was obvious in the US Open that Tiger wasn’t at his best. Double bogeys, something you hardly ever see from him, were there all weekend. He was up, then down, then back up. And yet, somehow he approached the 18th tee on Sunday with a chance to win or tie. He was one stroke behind Mediate, who watched anxiously in the clubhouse, and was about to tee up on a par 5 hole that he had eagled the day before. An eagle here and the US Open was his.
His first shot was off…way off, and he was in a fairway bunker. Shot two? Even worse…from bunker to rough. You could tell he hated it by the way he slammed his club down almost as soon as he hit it. Lying two in the rough he had to get his third shot on the green and close enough to the hole to give him a respectable shot at a birdie. And there it was. He hadn’t gotten a ball on the fairway, had two terrible shots, and suddenly his ball hits the right edge of the green and puts on that spin to move ever so closer to the hole. He didn’t have the easiest putt left, but he had a putt that Tiger will make 9 times out of ten. This wasn’t No. 10. Beautiful.
How good is Tiger Woods? Days after leg surgery, and rounds that saw his balls hit everything but the fairway most of the week, and he’s playing 18 holes today for yet another Major title.
Try to dispute it all you want, but the truth is simply Tiger Woods is the greatest golfer ever.
