The beast leaves his mark on WSOP
July 7th 2008 08:19
There was something obviously eerie when the final numbers for Day 4 (or 1D) of the main event of the World Series of Poker were announced.
In all, 6,844 players entered, that made first place worth over $9,000,000, while the top eight all cash over $1,000,000. But in all 666 players will cash. Creepy.
And well, it was more than creepy. It was kind of an overtone. The mark of the beast took down Noah (Schwartz) and Jesus himself (Chris Ferguson). It even claimed the Father-son combo of Doyle and Todd Brunson.
No wonder some of the players booed when the 666 was announced. Of course, they won’t be booing if they are among those 666.
Over half the field will make it to Day 2, as it appears about 3500 survived. But I’d like my chances of survival better if I played in Day 1A or 1B as 1C and 1D had many more well-known pros. (Day 2A combines 1A and 1B survivors, 2B combines 1C and 1D)
Overall Day 1D brought out some of the big names in poker, stage, sports, and elsewhere. And it brought a lot more no names just hoping to become the next instant poker celebrity. The action here wasn’t as good as the tennis match between Rafa and Roger (in fact it captured the attention of many poker players early in the day) but it was an interesting and tough day
Well, John Phan is out. So before they even start “Day 2” we’ve lost two of the three guys I thought had a good chance to win (I predicted Phan, Kenny Tran and Howard Lederer). Tran and Phan gone leaves my hope in Lederer. And he had an eventful day.
They call him the professor for his ability to study the cards, the math, and the opponent and have a great read on all. On Sunday he had a read on Charles Yu all day, where by dinner time Yu’s head was ready to explode.
Case in point, on one particular hand, Lederer called down every Yu bet to take in a pot with a small pair of twos, and lots of cards on the board. Yu was trying to get Lederer off the hand, but never did. And Yu was steamed.
Quite a few players have built decent stacks through this field and a few we are just happy will see Day 2, including actress Shannon Elizabeth, who has abut 20,000 chips.
Other names surviving the day include Phil Hellmuth, 2007 champ Jerry Yang, Jennifer Harman, Phil Gordon, David Tran, Antonio Esfandiari, Johnny Chan, Gus Hansen, and Victor Ramdin.
A few others who won’t be seeing any of that prize money include Annie Duke, the lovely actress Jennifer Tilly, ex-baseball star/drugie/poster boy for all that’s wrong with today’s game Jose Canseco, Aussie Sarah Bliney, Tom Schneider, John Phan, David Williams, Cyndy Voilette, ex major league pitcher David Wells, Andy Bloch, Layne Flack, and Phil Ivey and of course the aforementioned Chris Ferguson (Jesus).
But really, shouldn’t Jesus have been playing on the third day anyway?

Seriously, who cares if she can play poker or not. Still, Shannon Elizabeth can, and survives Day 1 at the WSOP
