Federer Wins Fifth Straight U.S. Open

September 9th 2008 03:29
Federer Wins Fifth Straight U.S. Open

Roger Federer U.S. Open Trophy
Roger Federer had beaten five different opponents to win the U.S. Open in five straight years. It started in 2004 against Australian Lleyton Hewitt, followed by Americans Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick. Last year it was Novak Djokovic whom Federer did away with in the semis this year. Today he beat Andy Murray in straight sets to win the fifth. In doing so he is the first person to ever win five consecutive titles in two different Grand Slam events, as he did the same at Wimbledon.

Federer never really faltered during the match. There was one brief moment in the second set where it looked like Murray might have a chance, but he couldn’t get it done. Murray was favoring his knee throughout much of the match, but played on.

It was a pretty exciting match with some long rallies that were fun for the fans to watch, and they certainly showed their appreciation for both competitors. In the end Federer won it 6-2, 7-5, 6-2. With the win he earned $1.5 million and a brand new luxury Lexus.

World No. 1 Loses, and Serena Shines at U.S. Open

Andy Murray image
They picked up where they had left off on Saturday in the Rafael Nadal – Andy Murray match, with Murray leading two sets to none, 6-2, 7(7)-6(5). Nadal was up 3-2 early in the third set when they began play on Sunday. Rafa would take that third set 6-4. Murray stormed right back in the fourth set to score the major upset of World No. 1. Murray was somehow covering every square inch of the court. Wherever Nadal put the ball it seemed Murray was there to return it. The final set was also 6-4.

Murray is now 1-5 lifetime against Nadal, and is advancing into the finals at a Grand Slam for the first time ever. He will face four time defending U.S. Open Champion Roger Federer in the finals Monday at 5PM ET on CBS Sports.

In the Women’s Finals Serena Williams dominated early and often. She took the first set 6-4. Midway through the second set it looked as if Williams was tiring to the point that once Jankovic started to gain some control it seemed she had given up on the set. However, when they changed sides of the net and were sitting for a break Jankovic sat in her chair watching the video screen as the cameras roamed around pointing out all the celebrities in attendance, rather than keeping her focus. When play resumed Williams took over again. Jankovic was within six points of winning the set, but instead choked and handed the match, and the championship back to Williams. She was more than happy to take the set 7-5. She then jumped up and down repeatedly in celebration. All throughout the trophy presentation Jankovic was inconsiderate and flat out rude. She was obviously unhappy. Then when she got the chance to talk she went on and on with her thank you list. At one point interviewer Mary Carrillo thought she was done, but was interrupted by her continuing on and said to her, “oh you aren’t done?” After this point Jankovic went on to thank her drivers who had driven her all around Long Island, and then someone else I forget. Carrillo then said, “Well lets get you your check.” Jankovic replied she didn’t want it, instead she wanted to still be playing. They then gave her the platter and sent her off to the side.

It was now time for the winner’s presentation. Serena talked a bit and did her thank yous, then Carrillo announced how much her check was, $1.5 million. At this point Jankovic came back over and asked Carrillo, “Wait, how much was my check for?” After asking again and trying to walk further into the camera shot, all while the trophy presenter was moving to the same area to hand the trophy over to Venus, Carrillo stopped and said hold on just a minute. Serena then took her trophy and celebrated.

I am picking Roger Federer to win his fifth straight U.S. Open tomorrow evening against Andy Murray. As I said yesterday, he is peaking at the perfect time, just as a champion does. he also has the advantage of not having Rafa standing across the court from him, something that has gotten to him as of late.

U.S. Open Rain Shortened Super-Saturday Results – 9-6-08

As expected the rains from Hurricane Hanna rolled in during the middle of the day and cancelled half of the matches on the schedule.

Roger Federer celebrates image
The rain did hold off long enough for Roger Federer to beat Novak Djokovic in four sets to advance to his fifth straight U.S. Open Final. The match was also Federer’s 33rd straight match won in Flushing. He looked so much better in this match than he has through the early rounds. It seems he is peaking at the right time, just as a great champion usually does. Federer’s serve was working well for him all day, he finished with 20 Aces, and just one double fault. Djokovic helped out by making 47 unforced errors, whereas Fed only made 28. Actually exerything was working well for Roger throughout the match, his forehand was spectacular, as was his backhand shots. Djokovic looked like he had a chance after the second set, but Fed just shut him down, especially in the 4th and final set. Federer will have to wait to find out who he will be facing in the finals on Monday night after the Nadal-Murray match was suspended early due to the weather.

Novak Djokovic SRB (3) 3 7 5 2
Roger Federer SUI (2) 6 5 7 6

Apparently playing into the Gold Medal match at the Olympics in Beijing is having a bad effect on those that made it that far. Both Elena Dementieva and Dinara Safina lost in the Women’s Semis, and now Rafael Nadal is close to being ousted by Andy Murray. The match was suspended due to the weather but before the rains came Murray pulled out to a huge lead over the World No. 1. They completed two sets, with Murray winning them both, 6-2, 7(7)-6(5). They started the third set, but only got 5 games in, with Nadal taking a slim 3-2 lead. Nadal is up a break however, and will serve when they pick the match back up on Sunday. The rain may have been the best thing that could have happened for Nadal. I think with the nearly full day to regroup he will come out and do what might seem to many the impossible, and come back to win this match. The winner will face four-time defending champion Federer.

The match will pick up Sunday afternoon at 4PM ET, and will be aired on CBS Sports after the 1PM ET NFL game. The Women’s Finals will start at 9PM ET on Sunday. With the Men’s Finals then being played Monday at 5PM ET.

U.S. Open Day 13 – Super Saturday Schedule – 9-6-08

Hurricane Hanna radar image
Flushing as well as most of the northeast is expected to be blanketed with the remnants of Hurricane Hanna on Saturday. This could reek havoc on Super Saturday scheduling. Luckily Open officials have a plan in place.

The actual schedule is as follows

Arthur Ashe Stadium (All Matches)

11AM ET Start time

Men’s Singles Semi
Novak Djokovic(SRB)[3]
V
Roger Federer(SUI)[2]

Followed by, but not before 12PM ET

Men’s Singles Semi
Rafael Nadal(ESP)[1]
v.
Andy Murray(GBR)[6]

The Nadal-Murray match might be moved to Louis Armstrong Stadium if they think they can get the match in prior to the rains moving in. Regardless it would not start until 12Pm ET at the earliest.

7PM ET

Women’s Singles Finals
Serena Williams(USA)[4]
v.
Jelena Jankovic(SRB)[2]

Followed by

Men’s Singles Champions
Pat Cash(AUS)
v.
Mats Wilander(SWE)

Now for the back-up scheduling plan.

If the entire day and night is rained out the schedule will be as follows.

Men’s Singles Semis would be held on Sunday, September 7th at 1PM ET (televised on ESPN) and 4PM ET (televised by CBS Sports, with coverage beginning after CBS’s NFL coverage)

Women’s Singles Final would be held on Sunday, September 7th at 9PM ET (televised by CBS Sports)

Mens Singles Finals would then be held on Monday, September 8th at 5PM ET (televised by CBS Sports)

Now to really confuse everyone, officials have an even bigger plan.

If the day-time session is completed, but the nighttime is rained out then the following scenario would go into effect.

Both singles finals would be held on Sunday, September 7th. One match at 4PM ET, the other at 9PM ET. The decision as to which finals would be in which timeslot will be decided after they see what time the Men’s Semis finishes. Both matches in this case would be televised by CBS Sports.

Please note however, if the Men’s Semis does not get completed Saturday the first scenario will override the rest.

Now that many of us are thoroughly confused, including the Open officials, and I am sure John McEnroe as well, here are my picks.

I think the battle of the two that have looked tired will stretch them both to their limits as Djokovic and Federer have to go five sets in what could be remembered as an epic battle for the ages. I do however see Federer getting the upper hand and heading to the finals.

Rafa on the overhand should be well rested for the finals as I see him getting past Andy Murray in straight sets. If they actually do move this match to Armstrong Stadium because they think they can beat the weather Rafa might even be done and back inside before the other match is over.

Now, as far as the Women’s Finals, I believe now that Jelena Jankovic has gotten over the hump and made it into a Grand Slam final she will actually win it too. It would make her the third Serb to win a Grand Slam in history, and also in 2008. (Djokovic won the Australian, and Ivanovic the French this year.) I think she pushes Serena Williams enough to tire her out in time for the third set which she will win about 6-2 or 6-3.

Although not popular down under, I am picking Mats Wilander to defeat Pat Cash with little trouble.

Enjoy Super-Soggy-Saturday

U.S. Open Day 12 Results – 9-5-08

September 6th 2008 10:23
U.S. Open Day 12 Results – 9-5-08

Well I thought the Bryan brothers would need an extra set to win their sixth Grand Slam title, and in doing so regain their World No. 1 seeding. The actually won in straight sets, but played close to a third set in tie-breaks. They won the first set 7-6 after edging Lukas Dlouhy & Leander Paes in a 7-5 tie-break. The second set ended with the same score 7-6, but this time they needed to get to 12 to win the tie-break by a score of 12-10.

U.S. Open Tennis Day 11 Results 9-4-08

September 5th 2008 07:56
U.S. Open Tennis Day 11 Results

In what is shaping up to be a great story, as I predicted yesterday, the Women’s Doubles team of Australian Samantha Stosur, and American Lisa Raymond did win their semi-finals match 7-5, 6-1 and advanced to the finals in Flushing. They are a former No. 1 ranked team, and won the U.S. Open in 2005. However, last year here in Flushing she had to leave early and head home to Australia. When she got there she went to the emergency room due to severe headaches. At first doctors thought it might be viral meningitis. After a month full of test though they found out she had Lyme Disease. She went through a course of antibiotics and slowly made a recovery from the disease.

Changing of the guard?

August 1st 2008 21:04
It seems unlikely, but Roger Federer may soon lose his No. 1 tennis ranking.

Federer lost in the Cincinnati Masters third round meaning that if Rafael Nadal wins the tournament he overtakes Federer as the top ranked tennis player

Tennis Girls Gone Wild

July 17th 2008 03:00
If you can’t be known for your tennis, you might as well be known for something. Well, that’s kind of the motto for Ashley Harkleroad who will appear in the August edition of Playboy magazine, which hits newsstands on Friday.

Twenty-three-year-old tennis player Ashley Harkleroad will appear nude in the August edition of Playboy Magazine, which hits the newsstands on Friday
True tennis fans will know who Harkleroad is. She is an 8-year pro from the United States, consistently ranked in the Top 100, but has no wins on the WTA Tour. Because of that, the casual tennis fan may have never heard of the 23-year old. Maybe because of the talent of the women’s game, she never did reach her full potential as she was once supposed to be one of the hottest young stars around
