Serena & Venus Williams Advance to Wimbledon Finals
July 4th 2008 09:14
Williams vs. Williams it is.
Venus Williams jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set, and things just were not looking good for Elena Dementieva. She would finish out the first set 6-1, and it looked like it would be a very short day, taking just 38 minutes. Dementieva did much better in the second set which would eventually go to a tie-break. They were both making unforced errors left and right, in the end Elena had 22, while Venus had 19. The tie-break got to 3-2 in favor of Dementieva before Williams began to dominate again ending it 7-3. Dementieva was only able to break Williams’s serve once, and that was only with the help of the net cording that gave her a favorable bounce. Williams has not dropped a single set on her road into the Wimbledon Finals for the seventh time.

In the other Ladies’ match of the day Serena Williams cruised easily to a 5-1 lead in the first set. At this point though Jie Zheng save four set points and move to 2-5. There was a half hour rain delay at this point, however the rain didn’t allow a turnaround for Zheng as it did the day before for Marat Safin. When play resumed Serena finished the set 6-2. The second set, as it was in the Venus – Elena match, was an entirely different story. Zheng pulled out to a 4-2 lead before another brief rain delay. When play resumed Zheng held onto her lead in the set and moved to 6-5. she had a set point coming on Serena’s serve, but hit it into the net. Serena would win that game and force a tie-break. Zheng didn’t give up though as the tie-break moved to 6-5 in favor of Williams. The match ended on a bad note for Zheng as she double faulted for the match point. Serena will move into the Winbledon finals for the third time. The crowd gave Zheng a rousing round of applause and cheers after the match for all that she had accomplished to this point in England. She should definitely have a nice showing in the Olympics coming up in her home country.

Obviously my picks were wrong, and all the experts were right. They should televise a match between Zheng and Dementieva just for fun. I would still like to see the outcome of that match. They can air it right after the Janko Tipsarevic – Mario Cilic match I am dying to see.
We do know they will be televising the Ladies’ final on Saturday between the Williams sisters. I am happy to see two Americans make it through to face one another, but it just isn’t the match I wanted to see. I am curious to see which one of them wins the second set, because if it is anything like their second sets today it will be a sloppy mess that goes on forever in tie-break.
I will have a full preview posted prior to Saturday’s match up.
In the last Gentlemen’s Quart-Final match that was suspended due to darkness yesterday they resumed with two sets already in the books. Rainer Schuettler had won set won 6-3, while Arnaud Clement stormed back to win the second set 7-5. When they resumed today the match’s third set would go to a tie-break. In that tie-break Schuettler would go up 6-0, amazingly Clement somehow saved set point after set point to tie it at 6-6. He then ruined it with a double fault, Schuettler would win the tie-break 8-6. The fourth set happened somewhat similar to the third, just reversed. It went into a tie-break, this time Clement was ahead 6-4, but Schuettler didn’t give in and got back to 7-6. Clement rallied back to win the tie-break 9-7. In the fifth set Clement had a match point at 5-4, but couldn’t get it done. After 5 hours and 12 minutes, a few rain breaks, and the suspension for darkness Rainer Schuettler advanced into a semi-finals match with Rafael Nadal.
