Andy Roddick to Miss French Open
May 19th 2008 22:22
Andy Roddick who had retired early in the Roma Masters on May 10th, and then missed the Hamburg Masters this week has withdrawn from the French Open today because of an injury to his right shoulder.
Roddick who is currently ranked sixth, and is the highest ranked American man also is not competing at this week’s World Team Cup in Duesseldorf. His brother John, captain of the U.S. team in Duesseldorf commented on his brother’s injury, “Andy is pulling out with an upper back shoulder injury, the same thing that he had in Rome. He is pulling out here and he’s also going to miss the French Open, too.” He went on to say, “I don’t think it’s going to be anything that’s terribly long and I would be surprised if he was not ready to go for Queens (Club). But ad for now he needs to take a good 10 days, 12 days, just rest.” The Queens Club tournament is known as a key warm up in the road to Wimbledon.
Andy Roddick has never really done well at the French Open. He has been ousted in the first round four times, including the past two years, 2002, and ’03. He reached the second round before being sent home in both 2004 and 2005. His best showing in the French was in his first attempt in 2001 when he lasted until the third round. His brother John also commented how Andy was playing better on clay recently and was looking forward to doing muchbetter than he has in the past at the Open.
With the way Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have been playing Roddick probably would have had little chance of making it to the end of the French, even if he could have bested his past performances. He should take the time he needs to heal and try to come back strong for Wimbledon which runs from June 23 – July 6.
