Remember Him Differently: Pollard
August 25th 2010 13:28
Many people remember the hit in 2008. It was about to be Tom Brady's 12 attempt of the season, all of them in week one against the Chiefs. He never threw 12 that year. Brady was just a year removed from the best statistical season by a quarterback in NFL history.
The man that sacked them and injured him for the rest of the year was the lone bright spot on the team's secondary. He was their leader. A stand up guy. Wrongfully cast as a dirty player. He was- and still is- Bernard Pollard.
The hard-hitting safety is perhaps the most underrated player in the league. People keep lingering over that hit. If they know him at all. He finished that year with 98 tackles.
Last year was his first year with the Houston Texans as their star safety. Of course, they had a speedy corner named Dunta Robinson. Before the season started, Robinson was known as the best player in the secondary in Houston. By season's end, Pollard clearly outplayed him.
Bernard Pollard finished his first career 100 tackle season- 102. That is a remarkable number for a defensive back. It didn't stop there. Pollard defended 11 passes. He picked off four passes and had two defensive touchdowns. The unheralded star was one of the best defensive players last year.
Pollard now claims a higher spot on this rising team. A team that is a big season from Arian Foster away from the playoffs. The people that know Pollard say that he will replace the leadership Brian Cushing displayed last year. I think he will. Scratch that. I know he will. As Nate Ravitz and Matthew Berry say, "Put it on the board!"
