Pro Sports Wrap - Sports Personality of the Day:Tony Romo

To continue my NFL historical player profiles that take a look at some noteworthy former players, I take a stop to the Chicago Bears teams of the 80's to write about their quarterback; Jim McMahon.

The fifth overall pick by the Bears in the 1982 NFL Draft out of BYU, McMahon began slinging passes the year Mike Ditka became head coach of the Chicago Bears. In fact, the coach and injury-prone QB were known to have clashes. We all know the whole headband story when he wore a headband under his helmet that said "Rozelle" to irk then-commissioner Pete Rozelle.

One of the best play-action passers in history, McMahon threw exactly 100 touchdown passes in his career and is 100th on the all-time passing touchdowns list. He made only one Pro Bowl, and that was in the famous 1985 season. When we look at his career in general, he was merely an average quarterback who was famous because of his personality and the defense behind him. I don't think anybody refutes that at all either, but he is an interesting player to look at from a historical perspective.

Not many people know that McMahon wore contact lenses while playing, because he is legally blind in one eye after an accident from his childhood. A dynamic rookie in the '82 season, McMahon soon became one of the best passers while rolling out thanks to his unique form in squaring up his shoulders.

Jim McMahon had a 15 year career, and he spent the first seven of those seasons with the Bears. In 1988, he had four rushing touchdowns, as the Bears wanted to use the quarterback sneak during McMahon's reign as their QB. His on-field awarness and instincts made up for some rather poor accuracy. At the time, McMahon was one of the most clutch quarterbacks, and he led the NFL in 1987 with three fourth quarter comebacks.

The injury prone "Mad Mac" was the 1991 Comeback Player of the Year, after recording a career-high 60.1 completion percentage and a respectable 80.3 QB Rating coming off of a serious injury that derailed his first season as an Eagle. So while McMahon wasn't really a special player talent-wise, pretty much every football fan knows him for the "Super Bowl Shuffle" and all the other crazy stuff he did while with the Bears.

1. Pujols injury update

Albert Pujols will be out for about six weeks with a fractured left wrist in a season filled with ups and downs for Puj. He sustained this injury after colliding with Wilson Betemit of the Royals in a baseball play gone wrong. The Cards have had to deal with many injuries this season to their stars. Matt Holliday has missed time, David Freese is still out, and Adam Wainwright has missed the entire season.

"You can't replace a player of his magnitude," general manager John Mozeliak said. "It just seems like we've had to deal with one injury after another.

"We still have to find ways to win games, and that's what we'll do."

The Cardinals have found ways to win games thanks to some amazing play by Lance Berkman. I don't see him cooling off. He's hitting line drives, and his BABIP is right where it should be. Detractors will point to a high HR/FB%, but that number is in line with his career numbers. Berkman is healthy, and he's mashing.

2. All Boston does is win, win, win no matter what

I feel bad for the Padres, because they stood no chance. The Red Sox scored ten runs in the seventh inning and won the game 14-6 behind Adrian Gonzalez. The interesting thing is that Orlando Hudson was the only player to hit a homer in this game. He went 3 for 5 with two runs and three RBIs. Chase Headley went 4 for 5 with a double and two runs (he scored on Hudson's dinger).

The Red Sox scored on a double play, twice on an HBP, and twice again on a walk. Evan Scribner gave up four earned runs without getting an out, and Ernesto Frieri gave up four earned runs without even giving up a hit. He walked two and was responsible for the two batters hit by pitches. Adrian Gonzalez went 3 for 5 with a double, two runs, and three steaks.

3. Lidstrom will return

This is great news for hockey fans in general, and it's the best news ever for Red Wings fans. Fellow defenseman Brian Rafalski surprised everyone by retiring when all eyes were on Lidstrom. Much to the relief of GM Ken Holland, Lidstrom will play another season in the NHL. He still hasn't lost it, and he is my pick for the Norris Trophy.A testament to his sportsmanship and leadership, Lidstrom is also a finalist for the Lady Byng Trophy and Mark Messier Leadership Award.

4. Tim Hudson

That's all I need as a header for this one, because it was all about Hud in the Braves' 2-0 victory over the Jays. His Game Score of 85 was backed by a remarkable performance through eight innings. Hudson gave up just two hits and a walk while striking out eight. He broke the 1,600 mark in this game. The amazing Craig Kimbrel got his 20th save of the year by striking out the side.

Ricky Romero had a strong outing, but that was overshadowed by the greatness of Hudson. The veteran starter his his second career homer in the seventh inning with two outs. It was a two-run shot to left that was 401 feet out, and it generated the only runs scored in the game. It's safe to say that Hudson didn't have a bad game.

5. Is Jimmer a bust?

Jimmer was great in college, but I don't see him panning out in the NBA. He's a great shooter, he works hard, he's a leader, and he knows how to win games. But there have been tons of guys with those qualities who have busted out. Why? They're not good enough. Jimmer isn't a true point guard because he is only an average passer and he stinks on D. I see him being a below average player in the NBA whose real value is as a scorer off the bench. I love the kid, but I just don't see him as a guy who deserves to be a lottery pick. He should go in the late teens because of his college production.

2010 NCAAB PSW Player of the Year

April 6th 2011 15:28
Connecticut Point Guard Kemba Walker

Jimmer Fredette doesn't deserve this award. Jimmer is the best offensive player in the country, but he is a subpar passer that does nothing else but score. He is also one of the worst defensive players out there, and he doesn't even try at that half of the game. Kemba is ultra-clutch, and nobody has anywhere near the number of tough, crucial shots that Walker has hit this year. He is easily the National Player of the Year.

Kemba Walker led his team to the championship and the Big East Tournament title. Yeah, the one where they won 5 straight days in a row with Walker hitting that incredible shot to beat Pitt at the buzzer. Unlike Fredette, Kemba is a solid passer that is decent at getting boards and plays tougher defense than you may think. He is fit defensively for the rugged Big East. While he isn't a great defensive player, Kemba Walker is a pretty good one.

If I was sitting there with the first pick in the NBA Draft next year, I would take Kemba Walker with that pick- granted I had an open spot at guard. Walker is an efficient scorer that gets to the rim and has a great mid-range shot. He excels off the ball and can create shots for himself at will. His toughness and athleticism allow him to take and make incredibly difficult shots that are remarkable at the college level.

Walker is probably the best ball-handler in the country, and his arsenal of moves to penetrate and attack the rim are easily the best in college basketball. He is a great leader, and his teammates feed off of him.You can try whatever scheme you want to, but you will never be able to truly stop Kemba Walker.

2011 Sweet 16 Preview

March 22nd 2011 15:48
1 Ohio State and 4 Kentucky

Brandon Knight and Terence Jones are the two best players, but DeAndre Liggins is the guy to watch out for. Can he help close of the perimeter? The answer is no. Liggins is great, but OSU have too many shooters. Jared Sullinger will destroy UK down low. Kentucky will put up a fight- Cal is too good to go down without one- but OSU is just so darn good
