World No. 1 Loses, and Serena Shines at U.S. Open

They picked up where they had left off on Saturday in the Rafael Nadal – Andy Murray match, with Murray leading two sets to none, 6-2, 7(7)-6(5). Nadal was up 3-2 early in the third set when they began play on Sunday. Rafa would take that third set 6-4. Murray stormed right back in the fourth set to score the major upset of World No. 1. Murray was somehow covering every square inch of the court. Wherever Nadal put the ball it seemed Murray was there to return it. The final set was also 6-4.

Murray is now 1-5 lifetime against Nadal, and is advancing into the finals at a Grand Slam for the first time ever. He will face four time defending U.S. Open Champion Roger Federer in the finals Monday at 5PM ET on CBS Sports.

In the Women’s Finals Serena Williams dominated early and often. She took the first set 6-4. Midway through the second set it looked as if Williams was tiring to the point that once Jankovic started to gain some control it seemed she had given up on the set. However, when they changed sides of the net and were sitting for a break Jankovic sat in her chair watching the video screen as the cameras roamed around pointing out all the celebrities in attendance, rather than keeping her focus. When play resumed Williams took over again. Jankovic was within six points of winning the set, but instead choked and handed the match, and the championship back to Williams. She was more than happy to take the set 7-5. She then jumped up and down repeatedly in celebration. All throughout the trophy presentation Jankovic was inconsiderate and flat out rude. She was obviously unhappy. Then when she got the chance to talk she went on and on with her thank you list. At one point interviewer Mary Carrillo thought she was done, but was interrupted by her continuing on and said to her, “oh you aren’t done?” After this point Jankovic went on to thank her drivers who had driven her all around Long Island, and then someone else I forget. Carrillo then said, “Well lets get you your check.” Jankovic replied she didn’t want it, instead she wanted to still be playing. They then gave her the platter and sent her off to the side.

It was now time for the winner’s presentation. Serena talked a bit and did her thank yous, then Carrillo announced how much her check was, $1.5 million. At this point Jankovic came back over and asked Carrillo, “Wait, how much was my check for?” After asking again and trying to walk further into the camera shot, all while the trophy presenter was moving to the same area to hand the trophy over to Venus, Carrillo stopped and said hold on just a minute. Serena then took her trophy and celebrated.

I am picking Roger Federer to win his fifth straight U.S. Open tomorrow evening against Andy Murray. As I said yesterday, he is peaking at the perfect time, just as a champion does. he also has the advantage of not having Rafa standing across the court from him, something that has gotten to him as of late.
