Kenny Perry Wins Third Memorial
June 2nd 2008 03:05
Tiger Woods isn’t the only golfer to like playing The Memorial at Jack Nicklaus’s course. This Sunday Kenny Perry shot a 3-under par final round to win the Memorial by two-shots. It was his third win at the tournament. He wasn’t playing to be the only golfer other than Tiger to win three times on Nicklaus’s course. He wasn’t using this as a tune-up for the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, where he historically isn’t very good, he will actually be sitting out the U.S. Open. He went out and won this tournament as a part of his final push to make the U.S. Ryder Cup team. You see, this year the Ryder Cup is being contested in his home state of Kentucky, and he would give anything to get there. In his effort he will be playing in Memphis next week and Hartford the week after the Open. He thinks he has more of a chance at earning points at these two events, than at the Open sandwiched between them.
Perry at 47 is now the oldest player to win The Memorial. He shot a 272 which is 8-under par, that was the highest score to win the Memorial in more than two decades (23 years). The 1,080 points he earned put him with in the standings.
Perry overtook third round leader Mathew Goggin who wound up in a four-way ties for second place. Mike weir, Justin Rose, Jerry Kelly, and Goggin all we two-shots back at 6-under. Goggin lot his lead early on Sunday, after the fourth hole he was no longer the sole leader.
As we previously reported Tiger Woods, and Vijay Singh had pulled out of the Memorial. Ernie Els actually did show up for the tournament, only to make an early exit after missing the Friday cut along with other Top 30 ranked golfers; Briny Baird, Chad Campbell, and Boo Weekley.
