Just Another Game...Right?
May 23rd 2010 21:02
So we enter this tonight’s game on the edge of our seats right? Aren’t we riveted by all of the excitement so far in this latest version of the Subway Series? What else could we possibly wish for?
Ok, maybe the yearly Subway Series has run its course. Since 1997 we have seen the Mets and Yankees face each 75 times; along with five post season games in 2000. Besides a World Championship for the Yankees in 2000, what does either team have to show for it?
These six games have become a financial oasis for the business oriented Wilpons and a cause for “special editions” on SNY, YES, ESPN, and WFAN. But other than the hype that surrounds these mid-season games, they are just games in May. Games that, in my opinion, would be better served facing divisional opponents like the Tampa Bay Rays and the Philadelphia Phillies.
I used to get mad when I heard players during interviews refer to these six games with such malaise. I would think “how dare they, doesn’t David Wright know I have bragging rights on the line at work come Monday?” The truth is… he doesn’t know and he doesn’t care.
And like a typical American consumer I now agree with Wright. I have been told by these players for the better part of 10 years that these are “just another set of games” so often that I now believe it myself.
So keeping this in mind, I will make some predictions regarding the rubber game tonight, as if they care.
1) Johan Santana will be pulled after just 5.1 innings of work… just like every other game.
2) David Wright will strike out, at least once… just like every other game.
3) Jerry Manuel will run out an unfamiliar line up… just like every other game.
4) Jose Reyes will continue to show us how bad he has become… just like every other game.
5) The Yankees will suffer some form of injury… just like every other game.
6) C.C. Sabathia will appear to be pitching in his pajamas… just like every other game.
7) ESPN will show some celebrity wearing a Yankees hat, cause it’s the “cool” thing to do… just like every other game.
The preceding statements are not meant to be harsh, just business as usual. While the fans place their hope in these two teams to help them achieve some workplace swagger for 14 more days, the athletes themselves are just happy to play in front of “playoff type crowds”.
Some of you may be saying, “But Ryan, you didn’t tell us who you predict will win tonight”. To that I say, who cares… it’s just another game.
