Pro Sports Wrap - Sports Personality of the Day:Tony Romo

Wow, it's come to this already. I am psyched. Butler is back and as good as ever, even without Gordon Hayward who was the team's best player on last year's squad. Shelvin Mack pushed Butler over VCU, and they find themselves facing the best player in college basketball. However, UConn is about more than just Kemba Walker. Jeremy Lamb, Shabazz Napier, and Alex Oriakhi are also solid players. Lamb is a great sidekick for Walker.

Brad Stevens and Jim Calhoun will be pitted against each other in a matchup that won't disappoint. It's Butler's stingy defense against Kemba's show. Connecticut was able to get by Kentucky, but Butler is going to be an even bigger challenge. For all the talk about Calhoun vs. Calipari, Butler have the youngest coach to ever get to 2 Final Four appearances. While Cal is better than Stevens, Stevens will find a great scheme to try and slow down Walker.

You can't stop Kemba though. The best you can do is slow him down. Butler was able to throw together another great defensive scheme to take out VCU's prolific perimeter shooting, but it's going to take more than a plan to take down the man. Oriakhi is one of the best interior defenders in the game, and he's going to be able to challenge Matt Howard. Howard's too good to stop, but Oriakhi isn't going to make things easy.

UConn's Roscoe Smith is another tough interior player. This game is full of enticing matchups on the inside and on the outside. The Shelvin Mack and Kemba Walker battle could make this game one for the ages. Shabazz Napier is a great perimeter defender, and he shows the toughness and great defense of this team that goes unnoticed because of the offensive explosion that is Kemba Walker.

Butler and Connecticut are two teams that like rough games, and I fully expect this game to be a 60 point affair for both teams- not combined of course. I think there will be about 130 points scored in total.

In order for Butler to win, they need to play things through Matt Howard and Shelvin Mack. Their two stars have to be at their best. They need to establish the paint early with Howard, and then they can start shooting 3s with guys like Shawn Vanzant. Defensively, Howard needs to lock down on Jeremy Lamb. Mack has to help lock down the perimeter, and they need Ronald Nored to dog Walker. Nored is the key to this game. He can't shut down Walker, but he can make life extremely difficult for him.

UConn has to pass the ball around and play to Butler's style. They both have similar styles of play, so that shouldn't be a problem. If you try to play fast against Butler, they'll will their way to slowing down the game and will greatly decrease your offensive chances. It doesn't work. UConn has to emphasize ball movement and wait for good looks. It's exactly what Butler does.

Defensively, Connecticut has to frustrate Matt Howard early. If they can get him into foul trouble early, things will be much easier. Then, they can focus on shutting down Shelvin Mack on the perimeter. Napier has to have a good day today defensively.

Both teams are great, and it is no surprise that both of them have made it this far. Butler and Connecticut are both the perfect tournament teams. They have great coaches, superstars, and role players. They will their way through games and hit big shots. I think UConn have too many weapons, and they just barely escape through this one with Kemba hitting some big shots. The role players on UConn will also come through.

3/3 NBA News: Corey Brewer to Sign

March 3rd 2011 15:26
It comes as no surprise that defensive specialist Corey Brewer will sign with the Dallas Mavericks. They had the most money of the three main suitors for Brewer, and they also had their mid-level exception left. It all equated to Brewer going to Dallas. He was traded to the Knicks in a Knicks-T'Wolves swap that was supposed to be a nice one for the Knicks. Instead, they bought out Brewer's contract in what was a pretty stupid move. Brewer is 25 and now has a multi-year contract with the Mavs. I see him being a really nice addition for this team. It was a great move, and he will be a quality contributer.

Utah Jazz head coach Ty Corbin received a two year deal with a team option for the third year. The front office was impressed with how Corbin led his team through the turbulent time in which their best player was traded, and their legendary coach was fired. The players have fed off from him, but Corbin still needs to bring home some tangible results. I don't need anything big from him, but I want to see Corbin actually win some games.

Leon Powe likes Memphis, and apparently Memphis likes him as well. Powe was released by the Cavs, and it really isn't surprise why. While Powe is athletic, I think he is a poor player. People think he is decent because he went on a tear in the playoffs a couple of years ago with Boston, but that was a hot streak. Powe can become an average player in this league, but I wouldn't get my hopes up about it. I think Powe is nothing more than a bench player at this point.

Kevin Love could get a six year deal worth 70 million. That wouldn't be a bad deal in my opinion because Love is three games away from beating the consecutive double-double streak of 50 set by legend Moses Malone. Love is a rebounding machine that is far and away the team's best player. A little under 12 million dollars is a nice deal for somebody that important to their respective team. Love's contract will be extended after a new CBA in place when the current one expires on June 30.

The Nuggets want to keep new point guard Raymond Felton on a long term deal. That would be a smart move, and it would maximize the value they received in the Carmelo Anthony trade. Felton is a solid point guard that is better than Ty Lawson. Lawson is average- which isn't bad- but I know that Felton is more appealing to the Nuggets. Dwight Howard has reiterated that he wouldn't dream of leaving Orlando. If I were him, I wouldn't either.

Deron Williams has been a headcase for a while. He conceitedly called himself the best point guard in the league, and his ego caused great coach Jerry Sloan to re-sign. Williams publicly announced that he would leave after the 2011 season when he would become a free agent. When you combine this all together, it's no surprise that Williams was traded to the New Jersey Nets for prospect Derrick Favors, two first rounders, 3 million, and Devin Harris. I am going to explain why the Jazz got the upper-hand in this trade.

Make no mistake. I think Deron Williams is a phenomenal player and one of the best 10 in the league. Williams may not be the best point guard in the league like he says he is, but he is still only second to Chris Paul. He is an elite player that is incredible at driving, passing, drawing fouls, and he is a strong player that plays solid defense. The problem was that he was no longer the face of the franchise. He was becoming a reckless ego, and the Jazz are also a couple million over the luxury tax cap. Nobody wants to pay that bill. As great as Deron is, is he really that much better than Harris? Is the gap between Harris and Williams really cash and basically three first rounders? The answer is a simple no.

Devin Harris is a star point guard in his own right. He can score and defend. He isn't as good as Williams, but he makes more sense for Utah. He isn't an ego that will damage the team. The Jazz look like a team that want to bring in an influx of young talent, and they accomplished this goal with the first rounders. The Nets will give Utah some high spots to choose from. Williams is a better player than Melo, but the press reacted more to the Anthony trade because it was talked about for so long and there was so much more build up that led to a huge storyline. The Williams trade was sudden and spur of the moment to an outsider that didn't see the signs- Sloan re-signing.

The Hornets got Carl Landry from the Sacramento Kings for Marcus Thornton and some money. The cash is a sweetener. It's the reason why the Kings made the trade. They don't have the salary for Landry. Landry is a much better player than Thornton, but Thornton isn't terrible. He's average, but he contributes nothing other than scoring. Landry is a gritty rebounder that does a pretty nice job of scoring himself. Mark Cuban has every right to be angry, but that's for another time. This was a nice deal for New Orleans.

The Cavs got Baron Davis and a first rounder from the Clips for Mo Williams and Jamario Moon. Moon is a garbage player. I would rather take Williams over Baron any day, but a first rounder is way better than Moon. I am going to give this one to the Cavs by a good distance. I have no idea why the Clippers would want to part ways with such a nice pick. I know that Davis has a bad contract and Mo Williams is more attractive because he is younger, but it really makes no sense at all to trade away a top ten first round pick.

Kirk Hinrich and Hilton Armstrong went to the Hawks, while rookie Jordan Crawford, Mike Bibby, Maurice Evans, and a first rounder went to Washington. Armstrong and Evans are the garbage players in this deal. Mike Bibby can still pass and knock down a jumper, but he is such a liability defensively. Hinrich is a great passer that can score some and isn't terrible at any one aspect. Crawford still has potential. I loved his scoring ability coming out of college. He will be better utilized in Washington. The Wizards are rebuilding, so the pick makes sense for them. I like this deal for the Wizards.
