Here Comes The Subway!
Of all the times during the year the NY Mets choose to struggle it can never come at a worse time. This time it comes as the Yankees get set to cross the bridge and head deep into queens.
Tonight begins the recently famous baseball ritual called the subway series. Since 1997 it has divided the Big Apple between blue and white, and blue and orange; big headed mascots and no mascot. It forces everyone in the tri-state area to take a stand. And for six days out of the year the term “unbiased” becomes as forgettable as the Carter administration.
The Yankees come into the series in a position to really put the screws to the reeling Mets. The Yankees will arrive at Citi Field battle tested and in a position to leave Queens locked in a battle for first place in the American League East.
The Mets on the other hand, will return to their not-so-friendly (at least in 2009) confines of Citi Field after their most recent road trip; which didn’t exactly resemble General Sherman’s march through the south. A 2-6 road trip has landed the Mets squarely in basement of the National League East. Some would argue that the good news is that they made it back in once piece; others would argue, that’s not good news at all.
Either way, a divided Mets fan base must gather up the strength to support their team even if the odds of winning this three game series look bleak.
Even though the “Subway Series” has lost some of its luster over the years, it still remains as a primitive gauge that points to a possible winner if the October Classic became the Mid-May Classic.
However, if the Mid-May Classic did exist, we might be watching a rematch of the 1961 World Series between the Cincinnati Red and the New York Yankees.
But back on Earth…
The Yankees enter this year’s extended Mayor’s Trophy game with a record of 42-30 over the Mets. Twelve games under .500 may seem like a high water mark for the Mets given last year’s record. But regardless, for the next three games the Flushing Faithful are going to be cheering like its 2006, I mean 2000, opps… I meant 1999. Oh, forget it, you get the idea.
