Tiger Woods Out for the Season and more
June 18th 2008 23:14
It’s a good thing Tiger Wood considers this U.S. Open win to be his best yet, it is now also a bit more understandable why he thinks so. It will be his last tournament for quite some time. He will be having season-ending surgery to repair a torn ACL in his left knee. He also has a double stress fracture of the left tibia, an injury he knew about two weeks prior to the Open. Doctors told him he needed to take six additional weeks off in order to let that heal.
The stress fractures were what prevented him from playing in the Memorial a couple weeks ago. He has been playing with the torn ACL since last July’s British Open. It apparently happened as he jogged home from the course while he was there. After it happened he won seven straight tournaments. Which is why he was going to try and wait till after the season to have the ligament repaired.
This news makes his win at Torrey Pines so much more monumental, not to mention all the wins since last July. A torn ACL shuts down football and baseball players for months. Granted golf is not a contact sport, but even walking on a leg with a torn ACL and a stress fracture causes some intense pain. Add in the torque created by Tiger’s powerful swing and just imagine how long a normal man would last out there.
ESPN has been comparing his performance to that of Kirk Gibson hitting the home run in the world series and hobbling around the bases, Willis Reed on the basketball court, and . They have also been showing replays of every time he grimaced throughout the 91 holes. Robert Karlsson’s caddy who spent all 18 holes on Saturday walking around with Tiger. He commented how all day long he kept hearing strange noises coming from Tiger, and more specifically his knee.
The sport is already contemplating how bad this is for the sport. Pointing out how bad the ratings dropped while Tiger was out recovering from the last surgery. There really is a good chance the PGA will lose a huge chunk of their audience until he returns in six to eight months.
Many who questioned why Tiger felt this was better than his first Master’s win, or his 15 stroke win at the U.S. Open should now be quieted, and might now agree with Tiger. It is just simply amazing that he could beat the field on one leg. Sure it will cost him some time on the course and a few big tournaments, but they can rebuild him, they have the technology. He will come back faster and stronger. . . wait that’s the Six-Million Dollar Man. I wonder if the PGA can look into adding that cool sound effect to all of Tiger’s moves when he comes back. Probably not while golf is on NBC and ESPN. They should outsource the project to FOX sports. They always come up with the stuff like that, The K-Zone thing with the ugly animated ball is one example of what I mean. Although wasn’t it NBC that did that thing with the hockey puck being lit up during televised hockey games? Anyway, the point I am trying to make is, Tiger Woods just became even more super-human than anyone had thought. He truly is simply the best.

This John Daly is the one that won the 1991 PGA Championship, the 1995 British Open, and a few non-major tournaments.
This John Daly played in 11 tournaments in 2008, and made the weekend cut just three times, with a best finish of 60th. This John Daly played in 24 events in 2007, but made the cut just 9 times, while finishing in the top 25 twice. The last time this John Daly finished in the top 10 was in 2005.
So, if you can't be fat to play a sport what about some of these guys, not to mention many many others in the NFL, NBA, and other sports. These guys aren't athletes? They don't play sports? We already see your thoughts on baseball players, which i don't understand. 80% of them would excel at any sport you put them in. In every sport there are a few hefty players, that doen't mean their game is not a sport.
I would like to see your list of sports and a list of the guys you think could play golf for four days on a pro course. . . and be competitive.
