Giants Sign Plaxico and Win NFL Opener

Just before the first regular season game of the 2008 NFL kicked off the Giants signed their star wide receiver to a contract extension. Plaxico Buress will make $35 million over the next five seasons.

It paid off right away for the defending Super Bowl Champions as Burress caught 10 passes for 133 yards in helping his team beat the Washington Redskins 16-7.

Brandon Jacobs got off to a fast start also with 21 carries for 116 yards. He also caught one pass for 8 yards.

The Post-Michael Strahan Giants Defense pitched in a bit too. They allowed just 11 first downs, and 209 total yards (125 passing, 84 rushing), while giving up one touchdown pass to Santana Moss.

Eli Manning finished 19 for 35 throwing for 216 yards, but had an interception and was held without a passing touchdown. He did however run in the teams only TD of the night. Newly signed kicker John Carney hit three field goals for the only other points the Giants would score or need.

The Giants defense which led the league last year with 53 sacks had one tonight. The bright spot of the one sack is that the player that has replaced Strahan at left end, Jason Tuck, was the one to record it.

There really wasn’t much to talk about on the Redskins side of the ball, other than it being Jim Zorn’s debut as head coach of the team. Clinton Portis also had 23 carries for 84s yard in the disappointing start for the Skins.

You know you're getting old when you remember coaches as players! I'll never be able to say "Coach Zorn!"

Hi James,

lol I agree. Granted I was not quite a teenager yet when he left his hey day in Seattle. It worsens for me here in Oklahoma though, since we had his favorite target, Steve Largent, as a State Representative for a number of years. Still those two things put together with the occasional bout with early senility (ever just totally forget what you got up to go into the other room for? lol) sort of makes you feel old.
