Flow: Manny on Waivers
August 24th 2010 12:45
1. Manny Ramirez just came off the DL and has been put on waivers. Only a contender starved with outfield depth would even dare to make an offer. Could the San Diego Padres try and pull him from their rivals? Anyway, I don't see any other team that could use him, and the Padres are barely a team that need him.
2. Did you know that the Padres have the best record in the NL? Most of us thought they were a team destined to fail. I mean, they have no power, right? They have been winning because of a free agent acquisition that was once low-profile, but that I did predict. Jon Garland would be great in the new ballpark. Clayton Richard stepped up and is now outperforming the guy he was traded for, Jake Peavy. Mat Latos looks like he could have a better career than Stephen Strasburg. Is it that premature to say such a thing? In truth, their offense is terrible. They have only one 20-homer guy and one 75 RBI guy. Well, he's the same player. The great Adrian Gonzalez. Gonzalez is also the only guy hitting over .280. He is at a .297 clip.
3. Let's keep talking about these Padres. Ad has the only slugging percentage over .500 at .515. Gonzo has an OBP of .389 which is the only total over .340. Did I mention that the second best slugger, Chase Headley, is barely over .400 (.404)? The best thing is the speed. Will Venable, Chase, and Gwynn all have over 15 steals. Venable is the 20-guy with 24 swipes. Gonzo is the only person with over 50 walks, he has 69. Venable is the only 5 3-bagger guy. He has 5 of them. Nobody has 30 doubles. Nobody has 140 hits. Only Gonzo has 70 runs, at 73.
4. The scope on stats is showing you how unremarkable the offense is, yet how they get the job done. Now it's time for pitching. Mat Latos has a 2.33 ERA. Two other starting pitchers have ERAs under 3.75. Latos has the only WHIP under 1.20. It is a sparkling 0.98. Garland and Richard have both tossed over 150 innings. Latos has the only shutout, let alone the only complete game. Luke Gregerson has a great 32 holds while Mike Adams has a very good 28. Heath Bell is once again tops, with 37 saves. Latos and Garland each have 13 wins. So you can see that the Padres are winning because of three great starting pitchers. One of them is the second best on their team.
