May 22nd 2008 05:20
Lindsay Davenport has won three of the four Grand Slam Tennis events, the U.S. Open in 1998, Wimbledon in 1999, and the Australian Open in 2001. The closest she has come in the French Open was making the semis in 1998, and winning the doubles title in 1996 with Mary Joe Fernandez. She will miss another chance on the clay this year.
Tournament organizers have announced that the 31-year old Davenport has pulled out of the tournament for “personal reasons”. Davenport who returned to tennis last September after taking 11 months off to have a baby is ranked 26th in the WTA rankings.
She joins other Americans, Andy Roddick (shoulder), Meilen Tu (hip), and Meghann Shaughnessy (left knee) who have all pulled out recently due to injury.
Roddick’s spot has been filled by Argentine Guillermo Coria, who made the finals on the clay in France in 2004.
