Roy Williams a Dallas Cowboy X2

The Dallas Cowboys already had defensive player Roy Williams, now they have an offensive player named Roy Williams too. On the NFL trading deadline, which was Tuesday, the Cowboys have acquired star wide receiver Roy Williams from the Detroit Lions.

Dallas will also receive the Lions seventh round pick in the 2009 draft. In return the Lions receive the Cowboys 2009 first, third and sixth round picks.

In 2006, Williams made the Pro Bowl with 82 catches for 1,310 yards while scoring seven touchdowns. He is in his fifth year in the NFL since being drafted in the first round by the Lions out of the University of Texas. In his career he has 262 receptions, 3,884 yard, and 29 touchdowns. This year however, he had just 17 catches, 232 yards, and just one touchdown. Of course that was for the winless Lions.

He should help the Cowboys offense. Sure you would think he would just bring more drama to a team that already has to split carries and catches between superstars Terrell Owens, Marion Barber, and Jason Witten, as well as Patrick Crayton, but I don’t see it that way. I think when you are sending Williams, Owens, and in three receiver sets, Crayton out into a pattern at least two of them should get open. The main reason, they opposing defense won’t be able to effectively double team any one of them. It will also open up the running game even more because they won’t be able to leave an extra man up to help with Marion Barber coming out of the backfield.

This should also help the transition to Brad Johnson at quarterback a bit smoother since teams won't be able to rush too many extra people since they will need them in coverage. what looked like a questionable stretch of games while Tony Romo is out is now not so shaky. They play at the Rams, home against Tampa Bay, at the Giants, have a bye week, and then at Washington. They could sweep through those games now, whereas yesterday there was talk where they could lose three of those games. I think by the time Romo returns the Cowboys will be sitting atop the NFC East again, only this time it will be alone instead of tied with the Giants and Skins.

The media of course will try to make drama out of it all. Especially since you know have Williams who often complained he was not getting the ball enough in Detroit alongside TO who is oft maligned for doing the same thing. The thing is though, you want guys that want the ball all the time. Just because they voice that fact out loud doesn’t make it a problem. Roy Williams should also settle in nicely since he will be playing on a team that should make it to the playoffs, rather than a team that will most likely wind up with the number one pick in the 2009 draft.

The Lions seem to have officially given up for the 2008 season, or as an NFL team, whichever way you want to see it. Today they also placed Quarterback Jon Kitna on injured reserve even though he was expected to be ready to return after about 4 weeks.

The Lions will be this year’s Miami Dolphins. I think they will finish 1-15, with their only win coming in just a few weeks against the Washington Redskins who will “play down” to their level of talent. Well that is what I felt up until yesterday. On today’s news of no Roy Williams, and no Kitna in Detroit, as well as the Redskins signing of former MVP Shaun Alexander I think they just might go 0-16.
