Foul or Fisher?

May 29th 2008 07:53
Thanks for coming to the party San Antonio. Now it’s time to screw ya.

That’s basically what the NBA said Wednesday when it said a foul should have been called against the Lakers in the final second of the game against the Spurs on Tuesday.
The Spurs Brent Barry had the ball and was bumped badly by Los Angeles’ Derek Fisher. No foul, no whistle. Barry was off balance and put up a desperate 3 that missed badly.
Derek FIsher
The NBA admitted that a fould should have been called on Derek Fisher in Tuesday's game

Today the NBA said that a foul should have been called and Barry should have gotten two free throws. Oh, so that’s supposed to make the Spurs feel better, being down 3-1 in the series now.
It should be noted the Spurs were down by 2 at the time, and Barry, had he made both shots only would have tied the game sending it to overtime. And there’s no guarantee he would have made them (although he did shoot 95 percent this year). Nor is there anyway of knowing what happens in OT had it got there.
But to have the NBA come out and say after the game that they screwed up is an insult. They aren’t going to pick up the game, it’s over.
Seems like just yesterday we had a post about the umpires in baseball not doing their jobs. Now it’s the NBA.

For their part, the Spurs players and coach said they didn’t think there was a foul. But of course not. The Spurs are a championship team and don’t want the focus to be about a no foul/foul controversy. They moved past it as soon as the game ended. They know they are down 3-1, and that was their own doing (spoiling a 20-point lead in one game), not the NBA.

It would be nice though if the NBA at least made it a fair fight.

Spurs or Lakers

May 21st 2008 07:02
Of the last ten NBA finals, the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs have been in eight of them, with the Spurs winning all four times they made it and the Lakers winning three of the four times they’ve been there.
But if history is any indication, the Lakers should win this series because the Spurs have never gone to back-to-back finals and the last time the two met in the Western Conference Finals, the Lakers swept 4-0.
But that’s the simple look at this series.
Kobe Bryant
Kobe Bryant has been the force for the Lakers

manu ginobili
Manu Ginobili is one of the NBA's top clutch performers

Regular season records:
Lakers 57-25, 30-11 at home
Spurs 56-26, 34-7 at home
Analysis: Lakers are the top seed and therefore have the home-court advantage, but as the record shows, that didn’t give them a great advantage over the season. The Spurs are nearly unstoppable at home, so the Lakers have to defend their home court well.

Offense:
Lakers: 108.58 points per game
Spurs: 95.36 ppg
Analysis: The Lakers obviously have a huge offense, built around Kobe Bryant’s 28.3 points per game, second best in the NBA. But:

Defense:
Lakers: 101.32
Spurs: 90.57
Analysis: The Spurs don’t let teams score a lot of points. So no, the don’t score as many points as the Lakers, but they don’t give up as many either.

The scoring has more to do with style of play. And that’s the biggest intangible of this series. The Spurs defense isn’t necessarily better than the Lakers, but the style is different as the Spurs play a slower style game than the Lakers’ up tempo style.
While the Lakers are a solid 54-10 when the scored 100 or more points, why drop to 24-20 when they allow 100. The Spurs are an impressive 27-1 if they score 100 points, but a mere 5-10 if their opponents do.
Whoever controls the tempo of the games should control the outcome as well.
The teams split the regular season series, each winning two games, and the outcomes of those games followed that pattern, the winning team hit 100, the loser did not.

Tim Duncan, Mani Ginobili and Tony Parker give the Spurs a solid trio, and Kobe is all the Spurs really need. All in all, surprisingly the Lakers probably have the better supporting cast, but I think in the end the Spurs probably prevail in this series in 7.

Down to Final Four

May 20th 2008 09:37
It’s hard to say that Monday’s game between the San Antonio Spurs and the New Orleans Hornets was as classic as I had expected. But it did kind of live up to the pattern of the series that the third quarter is the biggest key. The Spurs only outscored the Hornets by 6 in the quarter, but it was enough to give the Spurs a 15-point lead. Hornets cut it to 3 in the fourth, but they were done.

Spurs vs. Lakers, Celtics vs. Pistons. I think the Celtics-Pistons matchups was expected, and anticipated, but I think the Spurs are kid of surprising everyone by sticking around. It’s the heart of a champion

Celtics survive

May 19th 2008 08:57
The team won, but the player almost had it.
LeBron James had 45 points for the Cleveland Cavaliers, but in the end the Boston Celtics remained perfect at home in the playoffs, winning 97-92 in an NBA Eastern Conference semifinal.
Paul Pierce
Paul Pierce had 41 points for the Celtics on Sunday

Lebron vs. the team

May 18th 2008 07:46
Okay, so the Cavaliers win Game 6, forcing Game 7 today. Well, although we predicted the Game 6 end, we really aren’t too surprised. The Celtics just haven’t played that great on the road this playoff season.
But the conference semifinals of NBA playoffs this season have been all about the home team. If the Celtics win today and the Spurs win tomorrow, the home team will have won every game in both of those series. The Celtics beat Atlanta 4-3 in the first round where the home team won every game.
Odd considering that prior to this year, the last time any NBA playoff series saw the home team win ever game was a 2004 series where the Miami Heat beat the New Orleans Hornets

Flyers survive for now

May 16th 2008 06:38
Like the Stars did the night before, the Philadelphia Flyers saved their season Thursday night with a 4-2 win in their NHL playoff series against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Ultimately, this was just a small bump on the road to the inevitable Stanley Cup Final between the Penguins and Red Wings.
