As Peter Griffin Would Say, ‘You Know What Grinds My Gears?”

Carl Edwards doing a backflip
I am sitting here watching the beginning of the Nascar season finale. The final race of the year at Miami Homestead. At the start of the race Jimmie Johnson is in first place in the Nascar Sprint Cup Standings. Carl Edwards has a chance at taking over the lead. It looks even more promising since Edwards starts near the front of the pack, while Johnson starts back in the pack in the 30th spot where anything can happen to take him out of the race early.

So, I tune in at 1:30AM Central Time to ESPN2 to watch what is listed as 2 and a half hours of interesting racing. I either watch the replay, or record it to my DVR and watch it after the race is over. I do this because it takes what probably originally took 4 hours of TV time and cuts it down to just 2 and a half hours.

Now ESPN watchers far and wide will know that across the bottom of the screen the entire time is the ESPN Sports Ticker. This ticker shows scores and news from the day in sports.

So they go through the condensed prerace stuff, which is now a couple comments from reporters on the track, the national anthem, and not much else. Just as they are coming to the green flag to start the race I turn to actually watch the start, until now I had just been listening while doing other things on the computer. The second I turn to look, just as the drivers are hitting the gas pedals to speed up –

Across the bottom of my screen comes the line –

Jimmie Johnson wins his third straight Nascar Championship

Well guys, thanks for ruining it for me! I managed to avoid the results of the race all day. I had been out for most of the afternoon doing stuff. When I returned home I got caught up on the NFL scores, and then even watched the Cowboys beat the Redskins live on Sunday Night Football. The whole time no one pointed out who won the race and who won the points championship. No one that is until your bonehead network puts the results in the ticker right as your replay of the race is about to start!

Now I can hear two of my friends in my head pointing out that it is my own fault for not watching TV while it happens. I am notorious for watching almost NOTHING while it is originally on TV. I watch so very much TV, I am a TV fanatic. If I were to watch as much as I could while it was originally airing (while recording two other channels, sometimes three when shows are on at the same time) I wouldn’t be able to watch half the stuff I do. Eliminating commercials by fast forwarding, or watching shows online cuts down the elapsed time of watching shows so very much. I can watch an hour long show like Criminal Minds in about 42 minutes or less, and a half hour show like The Big Bang Theory in about 17 or 18 minutes. Saving 12-18 minutes here and there really helps, it means after 2 shows you can fit a third in the original time. With Nascar as I said above, it can make a difference as big as 90-120 minutes, especially if the race gets red flagged for some reason.

So I ask, what is the point in reairing an event later that same night if you are going to leave the results of whatever event it is in the ticker at the bottom of the screen? Wouldn’t it make more sense to edit the ticker to cut out whatever show is reairing in the middle of the night?

Now to finish off my rant I have to add what just happened. The race started less than half an hour ago (again it is scheduled for 2 and a half hours of airtime). While I was writing this they had a caution flag and went to a commercial. Now as I said I wasn’t watching, mainly listening. When they came back from commercial they were on lap 157! Someone hit the wrong button and skipped ahead more than 125 or so laps. While this is exceptionally annoying, and would normally really upset me since I wanted to watch the race, before I knew who won everything. Now I am sort of happy though since they ruined the result, because I still want to see the end and the celebrations. Now I shouldn’t have to wait 2 and a half hours.

NASCAR Chase to the Sprint Cup Preview

NASCAR Chase for the Sprint Cup

It’s that time of year again -- time for the NASCAR Chase to the Sprint Cup Championship. When the season started back in February at Daytona, this is what they were all fighting for: to be in the Chase. Only the top twelve in driver’s points have a shot at winning the championship. Now, 26 races later, we know who those top twelve are.

With just ten races, it is very important to get off to a good start. Since 2004, when the Chase setup started, a driver within the top 10 has won this first race in New Hampshire. Jimmie Johnson had a DNF one year and was able to overcome it to win the championship, but anyone will agree it isn’t the preferred route to the cup. Current points leader Kurt Busch didn’t do so well last year in the 10 races leading up to Johnson’s second championship. The 11 drivers behind him will need him to have some trouble this year too.

Since Busch won eight races, thus far he has 80 bonus points; this puts the rest of the field at a rather large disadvantage going in. Carl Edwards notched six wins, had 10 of his bonus points stripped, and sits just 30 points back. Jimmie Johnson started peaking the past few weeks to finish with four victories on the season and is 40 points back.

The rest of the pack has it a bit harder. Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Clint Bowyer, Denny Hamlin, and Jeff Burton all crossed the finish line first one time this season. This means they get just ten bonus points, which in turn puts them 70 point off the lead before the first race even starts. As for those without a single win this year, Tony Stewart, Greg Biffle, Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick, and Matt Kenseth, all 80 points back, may not have the luxury of getting one “mulligan.” They will probably have to do well, or at least better than Busch, Edwards, and Johnson, for the entire ten weeks to have a legitimate shot. While it is certainly possible, they will need some luck on their sides, especially with tracks like Talladega, Martinsville, and Atlanta on the schedule. They will also need to prevent the three leaders from stringing wins together, as all three have done this year, including Edwards's two back-to-back wins. Johnson had a strong finish last year with four straight victories.

As you will see in the table below, Denny Hamlin has the best average finish in New Hampshire at 6.8. I don’t really think that stat will be very important on Sunday, though. There are some other factors that are behind my pick for this race. My friends would tell you it is only because he is my favorite driver, and while that is true, that isn’t why I am picking him. My pick is Dale Earnhardt, Jr. My reasoning behind the pick is as follows:

*He has experience on the track, with 18 starts;

*he has finished in the top 10 seven times, even though his average finish is just 17.8;

*he has his first championship within his sights, and I feel he will come out strong; and

*he has Hendrick technology, engines, and notes now. Hendrick cars have done well on this track with six wins between Gordon and Johnson.

I feel I must point out that my pick for the winner of the championship is either Jr. or Carl Edwards.

The table below shows how each driver has done at New Hampshire throughout their careers.

Tony Stewart Will be Released from Joe Gibbs Racing Contract

Tony Stewart image
Tony Stewart is moving on to Stewart Haas Racing.

Two-tim NASCAR Champion Tony Stewart has been granted a release from his contract which would have run till the end of 2009. He will be heading to the team formerly known as Haas/CNC Racing. I say formerly because the team will be known now as Stewart Haas Racing. Tony will own 50% of the race team, as well as drive a car for the team. This new deal with Haas will also make Stewart the highest paid driver in NASCAR.

Haas/CNC currently have two race teams in the Sprint Cup Series, the #66, and #70 cars. Those cars are currently being driven by Scott Riggs and Johnny Sauter. This team by the way runs Chevrolets, not Toyotas, a make of car in which he had all of his NASCAR success. It is believed Stewart will not be driving either of those numbers, but it is unclear what number he will be sitting behind the wheel of. Some have speculated that it might be the #14, the number driven by Tony’s idol A.J. Foyt.

It is also believed he will be moving from one depot to another. Of course his current main sponsor is Home Depot, but late last week he agreed to some sort of deal with Office Depot. The details of that deal are still unclear. Office Depot is the current sponsor of the #99 car driven by Carl Edwards. You will notice a lot of this is still rumor or unclear, but it has also been speculated that Tony’s good friend Ryan Newman might also be making a move to be with Tony on the new team.

Eighteen year old upstart Joey Lagano is the front-runner to take over behind the wheel of the #20 JGR car. It will be interesting to see where Riggs, and Sauter will end up.

The official announcements will come Wednesday, when he announces he is leaving JGR, and Thursday when he announced the deal with Haas/CNC. He might also announce the deal with Office Depot at that point.

Stewart’s ten years at Joe Gibbs Racing have been some fun and successful ones. He brought them two series championships in 2002 and 2005, while winning 32 races, and amassing winnings totaling more than $68 million. Buying into this new race team is just the next step in the progression of Stewart’s career. To this point he had already owned sprint car teams, and three racetracks.

As I sit here looking at my almost brand new bright orange Tony Stewart hat that I just took off my head, which really seems like such a waste of money at this point, I begin to wonder just how long it will take Stewart to regain the success he has enjoyed in the past. I personally don’t think it will take long at all. He will love being behind the wheel of a Chevy again, and will be looking to make a mark quickly. I am going to go as far as saying he will win the 2009 Daytona 500 to open the season. He has two wins in Daytona, but never in the 500, he has come very close before. With the new car leveling the field a lot more than in the past, and a Hendricks engine under the hood, combined with Tony’s knowledge of how to run and setup the car for the race, as well as many other drivers liking him as a drafting partner, I think he can get it done finally in the big one. He may have to get off to a good early start considering at the moment the two Haas/CNS cars are running 36th and 44th in points, which would mean he would either need to make the field on time, or use up his Past Champions Provisional starts until he cracks the top 35 in points on his own, and the 2009 points start to count toward the starting field. What better way to do it than to be #1 after the first race?

How do you think Stewart will do with his new racing team?

Do you think Stewart will have any success the rest of this year, or will he just be driving out the string and waiting for next year?

NASCAR Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway

Kyle Busch Daytona image
Kyle Busch won his 6th race of the season at Daytona this week.

Pole sitter Paul Menard led the first lap with Dale Earnhardt, Jr. drafting right up on his bumper. A.J. Allmendinger hit the wall on lap 19 to bring out the first caution of the day. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. was scored as the race leader at the time of caution. Everyone hit pit road with Kyle Busch coming out with the lead for the first time in the race.

On lap 73 as cars pitted Tony Stewart climbed out of his car and let J.J. Yeley takeover. stewart had been suffering from flu-like symptoms all weekend. Yeley would do his job and get a top 20 finish, actually in 20th.

The race was filled with cautions, a total of eleven yellow flags waved throughout.

With four laps to go the #77 car of Johnny Sauter got into the back of Bobby Labonte which cause him to get into Dave Blaney.Blaney in turn hit Jimmie johnson who spun and clooected a few other cars in the incident. they included Denny Hamlin, J.J. Yeley, Paul Menard, David Reutimann, and Matt Kenseth.

By the time they got the field ready to go green again it was time for a green, white, checkered finish. Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards were drag racing side by side with about one and a half laps to go. In an odd twist Kyle was being pushed from behind by Carl's teammate Matt Kenseth, while Edwards was being pushed from behind by Kyle's brother Kurt.

Behind their racing their was contact between Travis Kvapil and Sam Hornish, Jr. that caused a multi-car accident and brought out the race's final caution flag. By rule the field was frozen at the time that caution came out on the track. After reviewing the computerized scoring loops on the track and the video replays NASCAR declared Kyle Busch the winner of the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona.

The win was Busch's sixth of the Sprint Cup Series season. Those victories have been on an impressive array of tracks too. This week the win was on Daytona's Superspeedway, he also won at the Superspeedway in Talladega, another was on the concrete mile at Dover, and even one on the road course at Infineon. This seems to be much different than when Jimmie Johnson was winning everything, but mainly on the cookie-cutter tracks. Kyle is doing it in many different ways, and leading the NASCAR points as he does.

Behind Busch and Edwards were Kenseth, Kurt Busch, and David Ragan in the top five. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. finished in eighth, while the driver who will be his newest teammate next year, Mark Martin was in tenth. the Labontes both had good finishes, Bobby in 13th, and Terry in 16th.Jeff Gordon wound up in 30th spot after a late crash took him out while running in the second spot. Juan Pablo Montoya had more trouble with another driver on the track, and finished in 38th, while the car he crashed with, the #16 of Greg Biffle, finished dead last in 43rd.

Next Saturday the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers head to Chicagoland Speedway for the LifeLock.com 400 where defending champion Tony Stewart will hopefully be healthy and ready to turn his season around.

Tony Stewart’s future plans just got changed. Or did they?
It’s no big secret that Stewart, driver of the Home Depot Toyota in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series, hasn’t been real happy in his ride at Joe Gibbs Racing. While all the reasons aren’t known, two things are obvious: Stewart isn’t winning. And Stewart isn’t driving a Chevy, where he had most of his success.
He had been working on plans to develop his own race team, and indeed that may begin in 2009. Rather Stewart is with them is yet to be seen

NASCAR Toyota/SaveMart 350 at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California

One would think when you force NASCAR drivers to make both the normal left-hand turns, as well as the unfamiliar right-hand turns that the race would get more exciting. This really was not the case in Sunday’s race in northern California. This had nothing to do with the fact that Kyle Busch got back on track and win his fifth Sprint Cup Series win of the season. It also had little to do with TNT coverage of NASCAR, which I have never been, and still am not a fan of, although maybe it did have a little bit to do with it. It was just boring racing for 110 laps of twists and turns, going uphill and down.
